Lycan: about usb, please

Is there a chance for us to see USB back port using as "store link" (printer sharing, external usb device, etc) Thx

I don't understand why D-Link doesn't implement this in their products. When I was deciding to buy my NAS (I bought the DNS-323), and now (most probably), my DIR-655, this was exactly one of the biggest negative points on D-Link hardware.

I bought the DNS-323 because of price/performance relation, and now, I'll probably buy the DIR-655 because of exactly the same. Asus doesn't offer yet a gigabit router (shame on them, something I also don't understand) and the Linksys routers in the same category of DIR-655 don't offer the same performance. But, both allow to attach external usb devices to them. In the end I always regret a little that I didn't bought something which would allow me to connect external hard disks to it.

And the most strange thing to me, is that we are not even talking about a huge additional cost. Both products already bring an USB port and Linux provides a low cost software way for them to implement access to external usb devices like hard disks. I believe this is probably a commercial strategy (they probably believe we will buy a NAS), but, I think this just backfires on them, making some costumers to buy other brands.

So, is there any product manager reading this forums, that will change D-Link strategy regarding attaching USB devices to their hardware? Your costumers are really wanting this! I would pay more money for a DNS-655 with this feature! :)

@mcduarte2000
you´ve got my point.... I think have a modern router and need to use a computer for every action is a non-sense way.... my best friend, for example, have an Asus WL-500W.. this router don´t have wired GigaLan, BUT have USB sharing any device and have the Asus Download Master feature, the COOLEST one... you can plug one external device in USB port (such as a hdd) and let download running with PC or laptop powered OFF..... amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! you can put 250 Gb of files from uTorrent with no one PC plugged in router...... I think soon i´ll move from one wl-500w

Concerning USB ports on Routers, I purchased a Belkin external USB hub that connects to the router. You can then use it to attach ANY USB device to it and use them acrosss the network. The only drawback is the fact that only one IP can use it at a time. You have to ask permission from the user to use the device. However, if you are the only person on your network, no problem. Just hook it in and attach hard drives, printers, cameras, scanners, whatever and enjoy the capability. It has 5 ports and you can add hubs to it as well. I bought it at Best Buy for $129.00 and now they are down to about $70 or so. I also have a DNS-323 NAS attached with two 500gig hard drives installed. No problems at all. I do have one problem with the router though that I'll address in another topic.

Sorry guys, that's the only function of the USB connector.

From all the discussions about NAS yes or no, it seems that the amount of memory for the extended firmware is the main issue here. It's always a choice, looking at it commercially towards production cost . Look at the Asus WL5xx series, they incorporate most of the features (although NAS performance is an issue there). But that range of products is much larger and can benefit from a shared firmware platform. They also sell much more devices, so they can afford to beef up their machines. D-link's 655 does perform much better than the Asus series on it's core service: networking.

And as far as I know, USB drives are only a bit cheaper the Ethernet devices and the performance is not really better in practice. So my choice would be: keep improving on networking capabilities and a hint for D-Link: give DIR655 buyers some 25% discount on a D-link NAS device (323 or 313). That's what I would call real customer value!

Amen EddieZ!  I completely agree!  The USB port was never advertised for anything else!  Right from the product spec page: "USB Port (for Windows® Connect Now)" http://www.dlink.com/products/resource.asp?pid=530&rid=2027&sec=0

Cheers!

I disagree.. so if router performance will decrease, let us choise... fw 01 = without 'usb link'.... fw 02 = with 'usb link'... from my point of view, this is only for D-Link sell more and more hw.... I wanna plug my printer without need new print sever... just my opinion....

I don't disagree with the concept of choice. There is choice between a Dlink router with options x and other brands of routers with options y or z. Your idea sounds nice, but it will make the D-link a mediocre NAS enabled router and a mediocre network router. Better to excel in one area than be mediocre on a few. There's a lot of mediocre stuff around.

There are some extra options I would like to see on my wife too, but you can't just have it all.  8)

Hehehe, very good point of view, although I don´t know your wife  ;D

I think the best situation is:  D-Link should never put this usb plug in router.... simple...

So, what your saying is because this USB port doesn't do everything you want, that which it does is meaningless?

I am so glad your not the one that brought up a wife!
