I'm trying to determine how much data is passing through my DIR-655 router to get a feel for how often my families usage of the internet (we have multiple devices most of them wifi using the router throughout the day) approaches the data plan I'm currently paying for from my ISP (for example:  I'm currently on a 10/mbps plan and I can save some money if I drop down to a 5/mbps plan).

What free tool(s) are available to help me figure this out?

None on the router itself. If you want those feautures you need a router that can be loaded with custom firmware (DD-WRT, Tomato) or buy a more expensive business class router.

So monitoring on the clients remains the only automated option, unless you want to do manual packets counts in the DIR
