Sporadic 'jitter/lag' when online gaming
« on: March 06, 2008, 04:23:34 PM »

I purchased my DIR-655 recently and have been experiencing a jitter when online gaming (TF2, BF1942, AOE3).   It happens roughly once every few minutes and only lasts a few seconds so it's bearable but it does effect online gaming performance.  The jitter/lag is certainly long enough to get me killed.   Basically I see the screen freeze up and then it resumes.

What could cause this?  I'm playing from my gaming PC which is connected to the router directly.  I've tried playing with QoS enabled and disabled.   I made sure that I didn't have any other applications running in the background and verified no other connections are coming from my network.   I've gone back to the default config just to make sure I didn't hose anything else up.   I'm experiencing this on multiple games hosted on different servers all of which I've spent entirely too much time on over the past few years.

When I connect directly to my modem I have no issues.  I also didn't have any issues similar to this with my DI-624 (other issues relating to it going bad and needing restarted but no issues when it had a good connection).

I'm on firmware 1.11.

I have this too.

Actually I've had a month or so with no problems.. originally problem was solved when I replaced my Linksys wireless-g NIC with a D-link DWA-556.

But today it has begun again.. and I'm getting all wireless traffic stopping (a friend streaming a movie from my computer stops as well). I'm trying to get to the bottom of this...

Ok just to let you guys know... I've tried a lot of things by changing the settings on the 655, none of which seemed to help (beyond the random time everything works perfectly).

My current test is to install the latest Atheros drivers on both my DWA-556 and the laptop's DWA-645 clients.

I just had a great session of TF2, really low latency (15ms) and no noticeable packet loss at all. I really need a few weeks of this perfect-ness before I can declare anything so I'll come back to post. Previously everything ran perfectly for nearly 4 weeks before the frequent PL during gaming starting occurring again.

Anyway my config is:
Gaming rig running DWA-556 with 7.6.0.200 Atheros 5xxx driver (XP SP3, Atheros wireless client)
Laptop running DWA-645 with 7.6.0.200 Atheros 5xxx driver (XP SP3, wireless Zero client)

DIR-655 settings:
1.11 beta firmware
WPA2/AES
QoS on, with rules
WISH on, with rules
Wireless N only, set to auto channel, auto 20/40

How is everyone else going with this issue?

An update from me... so its now nearly 2 weeks later. I've had pretty much a *perfect* run with these drivers.

There was one session when i had 2 short periods of packet loss, but nothing else, just lots of TF2.  :) Even with my connection being saturated with files being copied off my machine at the same time :)

Other benefits is a more thorough client app, many more options and shows more information. As well as it fixes an issue I sometimes had with the Dlink drivers - sometimes on a fresh boot I'd have to go in and "activate" my connection in the Dlink connection manager (I think it was when the router auto-switched the channel to something diff to when my comp was last on). Also connects a lot faster.

So, please try these only if you have good computer knowledge and its all at your own risk..

For the d-link wireless-N NICs just get the AR5xxxx series.

Cheers

There seems to be a pattern here.

Nobody on this thread mentioned what their log showed when experiencing 'jitter/jag', but they did mention lags of multiple seconds.  I'm wondering if the logs were checked if you wouldn't find deauthentication occurring?

If so, I also cured this problem by updating the wireless network interface drivers on two different laptops.

Just a thought....

Hi again

No when this problem occurs there is no de-authentication. That is a separate issue. No entries in the log.

The wireless connection is maintained thoughout, it is just that no communication occurs.

The good thing is, these atheros drivers are still working well.

Problem also happens when you are wired.  It is very apparent when using the PS3 online.  I never had this issue with the Linksys I replaced with this model.
