can connect wireless, NOT lan - ???
« on: July 25, 2010, 09:37:14 AM »

I have a very strange thing happening. I can connect through my dir-685 wirelessly from ONE (of 6) computers in the house. I CANNOT connect via lan from any of the computers plugged in that way, and shareport says there is a network error. Have rebooted everything several times.

Looks like this...
computer 1:
Plugged into lan port 1. Router screen sees and acknowledges connection.  No internet access, cannot access router by typing 192.168.0.1

Computer 2:
wi-fi dlink (works with regular OR guest wi-fi access) can access internet and BUT NOT router (by typing 192.168.0.1)  ???

Computers 3 and 4:
cannot access internet OR router.  :'(

Note: it was all working for all computers two days ago, yesterday noticed no connectivity, I initially figured internet was 'down' but with troubleshooting discovered modem works fine. I am on here writing to you via wi-fi through router, so it *is* sort-of working!!! No other computers (besides this one) work. They all say no IP adress is being assigned when I try to 'repair' connection at computer.   :P

IDEAS???

when I try to connect to router via wi-fi with firefox:
The server at 192.168.0.1 is taking too long to respond.
chrome says:
Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to 192.168.0.1

same response if I plug in a blue hose to lan port.

Pulled out another laptop - it also has vista on it (other computers which cannot connect are xp or win7) and IT will connect also. It will also allow us to login to the router.

I am using the wi-fi  via dlink connection via a vista computer to write to you...

??????????

On your dir-685 screen does it say internet connection? Also have tried all the lan ports. I know these are basic questions but we have to start some where. . Going by what you said so far it sounds like the unit is NFG. As you said your modem is ok I presume you have gone directly to your modem using a lan connection from one of your computers. With the computer that connects to the router can access all the menus on the router. The other thing is have you powered your router down for an hour or so to see if that makes any differance. Thats the best I can do. I have given up with my dir-685 and gone back to my netgear router. Good luck M  ???
PS I am back with the d-link and updated the firmware to v2.

Check that your I.P assigned on your computer is within DHCP IP Address Range, as the DHCP is kinda buggy......

Obtaining the I.P automatically may assign a invalid I.P, for some reason my Xbox 360 assigned itself with 192.168.1.209 which isn't correct.

DHCP in F/W 2.00 (latest) is VERY VERY Bugy. It is beyond belief that this F/W was compiled 4 months ago and released with all the bugs now.
