Problem sending email to secure SMTP server
« on: July 26, 2010, 01:59:58 PM »

For over a year I've never had a problem with my DIR-655.

Now my ISP has changed their email setup so that instead of using port 110 for pop3 and 25 for smtp, now it's 995 with SSL enabled for pop3 and 465 with SSL enabled for smtp.

I have changed the email account settings on the three computers on my home network accordingly, and now on all three it takes about five minutes to send one 5k email, instead of the milliseconds it did before. Receiving email is still fine, just sending is the problem.

I'm sure the DIR-655 is causing the problem, as the three machines on the network use different email clients and different antivirus products, the only thing in common is the DIR-655. Also when I plug an ethernet cable into my machine straight from the cable modem it all works fine.

Any ideas what the problem is?

You could search the forum, there have already been a couple of topics about this.

Hi EddieZ,

I have searched extensively on the forum but no-one has come up with a solution that works!

So your question has been answered. It's only lacking a satisfying solution for your issue... ;)

I also use these ports for email from different clients without a problem. Have you tried a router reset/reboot, just in case?

Yes I've reset the router, rebooted the router, tried pretty much everything.

Wireshark analysis seems to indicate that that the ports the email is being sent to get changed between leaving my laptop and arriving at the ISP's email server, i.e. by the wireless router.

gmail uses the same port for smtp and pop3 with secure connections. Do you have an account for gmail? You could try to set up your email client with gmail server to see how it goes. I do not have the problem over here and this issue is likely the DNS server that your ISP use for their mail server is configured wrongly.

Hi Greenpalmer,

The problem is in your Wireless Setup. Are you using a Secure Encryption between the Router and your Wireless Computers? Have you also configured your Wireless Computer's Firewall to allow your Email Program FullAccess going through your Firewall?

Hi thecreator,

1) I guess that as Outlook sends the email with encryption it is using Secure Encryption between the wireless computers and the router. Do I need to change router settings to allow for this?

2) I have tried opening ports through the firewall but it made no difference - perhaps if I make any required changes as per point 1 then together with opening the ports it may solve the problem.

The encryption makes no difference for the wireless connection or the router. It's just 'data' (bits and bytes).
Have you tried changing your router firewall settings? Try to set them less restrictive. I

I have changed the firewall settings to endpoint independent, and also made an Application Rule allowing traffic to and from ports 465 and 995 through the firewall - still no difference, sending an email takes a long time.

I really can't think of anything else to do.

I have raised a support query with Dlink a few days ago, but have had zero response so far.

Don't expect a swift answer. It might be better (as with other electronic devices and networking issues) to have someone have a look at your configuration on location.

I have sorted the problem at last.

When I did the factory reset before I then reloaded my router configuration from file. Now I have done a factory reset and manually put in all my router settings, and everything is working fine again - email sending is back to split seconds rather than minutes.

Thank you to everybody who contributed help and advice.

Alas I declared the problem fixed too soon!

We switch the router off overnight as it is in one of our children's bedroom, and on switching it on the following morning (no settings changed) the slow sending of emails has returned.

So resetting the router to factory defaults and manually inputting my configuration sorts the problem out, but turning it off and on again brings the problem back.
