Router constantly resets with WoW and 2 computers.
« on: August 01, 2010, 08:45:54 PM »

My girlfriend and I play WoW (and other games) online.  I have desktop, and she's on a laptop.

I can play solo for quite a while without any disconnections, as can my girlfriend, but if we both get on together it suddenly starts kicking us incessantly.  The Network Manager will show Local Only, and I'll have to reset the network connection to get the router to start playing nice again.  Sometimes I'll have to diagnose / reset several things to get it running.

What is causing these disconnects?   I have the Game Rules for WoW set, so please don't post replies about that -- which isn't the case anyway since it's not disconnecting us from the game only; it's dropping the internet totally.

how are the the game rules set up. Are you using Gaming and or Gamefuel or both? What FW is currently loaded? What ISP service do you use? DSL or Cable?

Whoops, sorry.  In my frustration I forgot the details.

I am using 1.22NA, and have Time Warner Roadrunner Turbo (Side note:  Time Warner = grrr).  I'm running on Vista Ultimate-64.

I have gaming rules set up, using the preset for World of Warcraft, and have added the other ports that Blizzard lists for WoW which Dlink forgot to include in the list.
I have Gamefuel enabled, but haven't set up any parameters for it since I'm unfamiliar how to do so with WoW.

I presume Time Warner is Cable? Please review the Gaming and Gamefuel sticky for possible setup for the PC's. I think you should be able to set up the PCs in the same fashion as game consoles. I would set up IP reservations first and then go from there. Make sure the SPI Firewall settings are set up too. Might help. Let us know.

Yes sir, Time Warner is Cable.  I actually used the Gaming / Gamefuel sticky to help set things up, but it doesn't specify how to set things up for two computers and an MMO.  I presume those settings for Gamefuel are for XBox Live, no?
And the SPI Firewall settings are up.  As I said, it's not really a problem with it blocking incoming packets from the game server.  It's a problem with the router suddenly resetting as soon as both computers are in the game for any length of time. I'm seeing many people saying the same things, that the router randomly reboots during heavy loads and such.  I just can't find any post that says how to fix it!  Grrr

Try setting up the game fuel, and see if it help. Set up SPI for End Point Independent for both UDP and TCP. Since you have 2 PCs trying to game. I would set up one PC in the Gaming section for the host PC as you can only set up one port for gaming. The Gamefuel is for XBL however the ports listed are global and not specific, so you could set up both PCs on game fuel and use the settings I mentioned. I might work better that way. Are there any logs mentioning anything about rebooting or do they say anything before or after the reset? Let us know if you see the same thing on factory settings.
I would shut off WISH, WiFi protected setup, Short GI, Dynamic Fragmentation, DNS relay only if you have manually inputted the DNS addresses into the Basic/Internet/Manual settings from the WAN section of Device Info. If this doesn't help, Then lets do the factory reset and then see if it happens again. I do suspect probable HW issue and that DLink might need to be called. What hardware version is the router? A1 or A2?

**EDIT**  It's actually hardware version A2.  I have set gaming settings up for my computer for WoW.  I dunno how to set it for Starcraft 2, so I can't be sure how to change that.  When my girlfriend logs in with me, I'll see how long we last and as soon as we're dropped I'll hop into the router logs and look for a message.  Thank you for your help.  :)

I believe it's A1, but I'm not sure.  I'm at work right now, so I'll have to check it out upon my return home.  I should be home by about 6-6:30 PST.  However, I can say that I have set the SPI for End Point Independent for both TCP and UDP.  I don't understand what that does (I'm not completely network savvy), but I read to do that.  I'll check the logs when I get home too.

Ok, so I ran fine for seven days, then noticed things go wrong again.  Router released but failed to renew, remained at "Establishing..." and seriously begged me to break it.

There is nothing in the logs that shows anything going wrong.  No error or warning or anything.  As soon as I disconnect the router and go to Cable Modem alone, I get internet.

If I could return this router, I would.  This is ridiculous!

Hi all i'm new to this site but know a lot about networks and love this d-link gaming router but it has its limits. WOW opens a lot of connections and this router jest can't handle more then 2000 max connections that would be the only reason i can think of that would make this router lock up

hope this helps

Thats not the router crashing, that the router failing to renew the IP lease with the cable modem. What settings do you have on this page?

http://192.168.0.1/Basic/WAN.shtml

Also go to the link below and look for anything marked "Signal" and "Logs" and paste those as well.

Ok, settings on the WAN page are:

Internet Connection:  DHCP
Advanced DNS:   Disabled
Host Name:   Blank
Use Unicasting:   Enabled
Primary and Secondary DNS:   0.0.0.0
MTU:  Default (1500)
MAC Address:   Cloned PC's

The other link you posted displayed Cable Modem : DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0 Compliant, and a bunch of other stuff -- but nothing marked Signal or Logs.  :-/   I'm desperate, here...  every review I see says this modem router is wonderful for games, and I can't seem to get it to love me.  Should I hug it??

Well heres the thing, when you dealing with two computers connecting to the same service, things get complex fast. I tried to write out a medaphore explaining it, but it ended up just being more confusing. So I will try to break it down to brass tacks. When two games try to go online to play the same game, the router gets confused. Its seeing the same traffic, coming and going to the same ports. It has systems in place to deal with it, but alot of times those systems are bypassed with port forwarding for performances reasons. A port forwarding says all traffic of this type, going through one specific port gets directed to one specific computer. So what ends up happening is as soon as your computer uses a port that is already being directed to the other computer via a port forward rule assigned to a active session, you aquire a conflict. Now gamefuel tries to specify those rules to specific IP ranges, so there are less conflicts, but if theres any ports you missed, they conflict, and the router reboots to clear all sessions to resolve the conflict= crash. So yea, I can't think of any easy way of saying it. Thats why LAN parties are popular. Were you guys able to play WoW at the same time without problems before?

Oh, by the way, you probably want to disable Unicasting and enable Multicasting. I don't think it will fix your problem, but it could help with performance. Also, why do you have your router cloned with your PC's Mac? Don't think that would cause a problem, but cant see it helping. Finally, you may either want to try out advanced DNS (OpenDNS) or atleast set your ISP DNS server as a static.

PS. Send me the model of your modem? I have found some don't allow access to it (which gets me sooo mad)  like the SA Webstar and Motorola SB5101U.

Also, in poking around google, looks like you were having a problem before with connectivity involving packet loss?

Modem is an Ambit U10C018.

Packet loss?  Oh, for World of Warcraft?  A long time ago, and it ended up being the 7 year-old model Time Warner had given me for a cable modem.  When they tried to diagnose it, it had some serious errors.  They replaced it with this Ambit model a while ago; long before I'd even gotten the DGL-4500.

We have only recently begun using one network.  It's been an issue since she's been here.  Part of me is wondering if Time Warner isn't somehow mucking things up.  Grrrr  (I'm not a fan, but Verizon Fios hasn't come to my area yet).

I've noticed that Gaming Rules won't let me set up multiple rules for the same game, so should I disable them?  Gamefuel allows IP ranges, but I am unsure how to set them up to cover both mine and my girlfriend's computer.  Like, I'm not sure what to put for  Local IP Range, Local Port Range, Remote IP Range, and Remote Port Range.  With routers, I'm a newb...  :(

I turned off Unicasting and enabled Multicast streams.  Rebooting now, hopefully it'll be nice to me this time.

Probably not. This isn't a simple problem at all, so don't exspect a simple answer.

As for game fuel, thats actually easier then you might think. Atleast in therory. Local IP is any individual computer in your house, and Local Port range is the ports you want open for that computer. Remote IP in this case is either your WoW server, or possible a broad range, depending on the need, and remote port is the port you want that incoming traffic to be routed to.

See, one thing alot of people mess up is not all forwarding has to be two way. Some traffic is one way. For example, when walking into a new city, the server just has to download some info onto your computer, you don't have to upload much info back. This is because your PC is doing most of the thinking, and the server is probably just doing time of day, enviroment, and so on. PvP is different though, thats a constant stream of data between players.

As for your modem, yea..umm, do you lease that? If so you might want to ask for a Motorola. I think TWC are phasing out the Ambits for the Motorola SB5101, you might want to ask them about it. Not that I think the issue is your modem mind you, but anything with a 1 page gateway (which I confirmed) is not ok in my book.
