DIR-825 renewing WAN IP too frequently
« on: August 02, 2010, 04:16:57 AM »

Hi,

I just decided to upgrade my home network using DIR-825 as router, a DAP-1522 as bridge + an "older" DIR-615 as access point (connected by wire to the DAP-1522). I have a ZYXEL P660H-D1 ADSL modem provided by my ISP.

My old configuration was to just use the DIR-615 for wireless at home. That worked "ok".

The problem is that the new DIR-825 keeps losing WAN connection, renewing the IP every 1-10 minutes or so (being off-line for 10-15 seconds each time, which means the connection is practically useless).

I've included an example log below.

I had this problem with my DIR-615 but then the problem decreased with new firmware. The problem is now that I'm using the latest DIR-825 firmware so there's no hope for improving things that way.

I'm about to return the router and buy another brand. I've read several posts on this and understand that it is not an uncommon problem. However, the solution is always either to buy a new router (non D-LINK) or to upgrade the firmware...nothing that I can do on my side (i.e. no settings that can fix this).

Now, I like the intranet operation and I'm just wondering - before I dump this router - is there anything that I can do to to remove this problem? The DHCP lease should be renewed every 1200 seconds (if I understand the log) but this is not being done. Is the problem on the router side or on the ISP side? There seems to something on the router side that's not all right - the problem looked worse this morning than it was yesterday.

PS. My log looks like this (this was yesterday night - today the WAN dropout frequency is higher):

After the firmware upgrade, have you tried to "reset to factory defaults" and then reconfigure the router settings?  It has also been posted that the router upgrades might cause such problems and you might have to reset the configuration.

Also, other posts seems to suggest that "locking" the WAN "Ethernet" port to a speed, instead of the AUTO settings, might fix this.

Ok,

Spent more hours and money on this today. It turned out that the modem was getting old and cranky (dropping connection frequently). I tested by connecting only my laptop to it - no router - still loosing WAN IP frequently. I bought a new modem and now it works better. Still occasionally loosing WAN but the connection seems usable. May have to reset the setup daily, we'll see.
