DIR-655 Stops passing traffic
« on: August 04, 2010, 12:42:12 PM »

Hi Everyone,

I have a D-Link DIR-655 which I bought on recommendation from a highly knowledgeable friend who owns one and reports that it operates flawlessly.  So far, I am generally happy with everything about this router--setup, options, signal strength, DDNS, etc.

As of late, however, I am constantly running into a problem where all my laptops (1 MacBook, 2 MacBook Pro) have full wireless signal, but no traffic passing to or from the Internet.  I have to go to the device and power cycle it to get it to come back up.

My network consists of the 3 previously mentioned Mac laptops connected wirelessly, a wireless printer, Wii via wireless, Roku via ethernet cable, and a FreeBSD machine via ethernet cable.  As far as I can tell, when the problem appears none of these devices can get to the Internet.  I need to verify for sure on the wired connections, though.

On the WAN side is a Motorola Surfboard 6120.

Thanks for any help you can offer, and please let me know what info I can provide to assist in the troubleshooting.  I am not home at the moment to be able to provide the info, but will be there in a few hours.

Thanks!
Jim

I think you need to eliminate the Motorola first. And check if the issue is generic for all (wired and wireless) connections.

Have you made some changes to the network recently?

Maybe same problem?

I hope this helps.

Hi EddieZ,

Thanks for the reply.  I know what you're saying about the Motorola, though a power cycle of the DLink always fixes it--I don't cycle the Motorola.  Also, I cannot even load the DLink's admin interface from the local network when this problem occurs, which would seem to me to rule out the Motorola.  I forgot to mention that detail.

I agree that I need to nail down whether wired connections are involved.  Next time I am home for the problem (it usually happens to my wife while I am at work or school) I will check my Unix machine.

I have not made any changes to the network.  I bought this router and the modem together a few months ago when I switched from DSL to cable.  I had been on Verizon DSL with a Westell Versalink 327W (all-in-one modem/router/switch/wap device).  This problem has been occurring several times a week since I made the switch.

All other devices on my network were on the network when I had the Versalink in place.

Thanks,
Jim

JimMonz,

The problems look similar, except that I am unable to get to the router interface during the time of trouble.  Also, IIRC the bonjour networking between local Macs goes dead too--this is something else I will have to verify though.

In reading the topic on time-setup linked from your linked topic, I do recognize symptoms related to time problems.  As a matter of fact I changed my router to use NTP at one point, and pointed it to an NTP server not related to DLink.   The router went into the constant reboot cycle mentioned in the thread--I had to reset it and reconfigure it to fix that problem.

I will read further into that topic and see if I can figure out what configs I have which may cause some of the time related issues.

Thanks,
Jim

Edit: My apologies, I got hung up on the time problems and didn't notice that after you fixed those, my exact issue started showing up on your router.  Reading further...

JimMonz,

So far I have verified that I already have Daylight Savings and SecureSpot disabled.  However, I am on firmware 1.32NA and in your topic I see you are on 1.34NA.  So I am looking into upgrading the firmware.

Also, I do have NTP enabled and pointing at ntp1.dlink.com

Ugh,

I had the router, which is reporting that it is running firmware revision 1.32NA, check online for a newer version.  It reported there are no newer versions.

So I went to the DLink site and downloaded the 1.34NA software.  In the router interface I chose to upload the .bin file, which it accepted and then told me to wait a period of time for the upgrade to take place.  When the time period expired, the page refreshed to the login screen.  I logged in, only to see the revision still reported as 1.32NA.  I rebooted the router, no change.  I tried the upgrade again, no change.

What gives?

There's another topic on this issue also.

I think you have factory default the router, then flash 1.34NA.

Let me know.

I have been searching for topics on the firmware update troubles I am having, but the SMF forum search has never been friendly to me.  I don't know what you mean by "flash 1.34NA"

Thanks a lot,

Hi Jim,

When you installed the Cable Modem and D-Link Router together, did you use the D-Link Router's Setup Utility? Try it and see what happens from a Wired Computer.

Hello thecreator,

Thanks for getting involved.  I do believe I ran the setup wizard when I connected the devices, but to be sure I re-ran the wizard just now.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Flash means to upgrade the D-Link Router to Firmware Version 1.34NA.

http://192.168.0.1/Tools/Firmware.shtml You need to log into the Router and its settings.

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DIR-655&tab=3

Use Internet Explorer for the D-Link Support Site.

Sorry, software engineer here.

1. Save current settings.
2. Factory default router.
3. Update to version 1.34NA (flash).
------------------------------------
4. Restore settings.

OR

4. Turn off Daylight Savings option. Set time manually.
5. Turn off Securespot
6. Setup for 300 Mbps.

I've had it this way for weeks with no problems.
If you enable anymore options, you're on your own :)

Ok Gentlemen (Ladies?),

I have successfully upgraded to 1.34NA and restored my settings.  SecureSpot is disabled, Daylight Savings is disabled.

Time to keep watch over it and if I run into problems again I will look into the 300mbps setting and turning off NTP.

Thanks!

All right everyone, I haven't seen the problem return since I last posted.  I believe the firmware upgrade was the clincher as I really didn't change anything else--just verified some things.

Thanks for all your help!
