How to create Ad-Hoc WiFi between DIR-655 and iPhone4 ???
« on: August 07, 2010, 10:02:36 AM »

Hi Guys,

I've been Googling for a week now ??? trying to understand the basics of Ad Hoc WiFi but without much luck.
I would like to create an AdHoc Wifi connection between my PC (Win7) and my Iphone4 but can't seem to be able to accomplish this.  :'(

I have the DIR-655 router wired to my PC and creating WiFI which is used by 2 laptops and 2 iphones succesfully. I was hoping there is some way to configure ad hoc wifi as well. Is it possible to do this with my current hardware?

My skill level is fairly basic:  I'm not a networking gury by any means, but I've set up a couple of other home networks (wired and wireless (8 computers) and are comfortable setting up things like port forwarding, firmware upgrades, DMZ and Mac > PC networks...)

Thanks in Advance  ;D

Yanni

PS I did a few searches in these forums but I can't seem to find a thread that discusses this. Sorry if this topic has already been covered.  :o

Ad-Hoc mode – This is for peer to peer wireless connections. Clients running in Ad-Hoc mode can connect to each other as required without involving central access points.

To be clear: an AP (the router) is not a client.  ::)

Ok. So what do I need to do to make this happen?

You need your PC to have a wireless device. Most manufacturers provide a tool to set up an Ad Hoc network with the wireless card that's in the PC. So no router involvement whatsoever.

I think this ends the conversation on this board...
