SharePort 3.0 Problems with v1.34NA + A4
« on: August 11, 2010, 07:20:58 AM »

Hi I have the latest firmware on a A4 revision of DIR-655. I use shareport very often for my Canon IP4000 printer. PC and 2 laptops all have Windows 7 (2x x64 + 1x x86) installed (1 fresh installation) and new SharePort Utility v3.00.

Problem is that SharePort can only connect to printer for about 1 day after router reboot. Whenever I want to print after few days that router hasn't been rebooted, shareport just keeps connecting/disconnecting, but as soon as I reboot the router, shareport immediately connects and prints the documents (I don't even have to cancel the print queue and send it again).

Please it really bothers me, what can be the problem?

Or is there any way to reboot DIR-655 on a schedule? Maybe some ssh script scheduled on a desktop PC?
Thx

Use a cheap timer to unpower the router daily  :)

There is a special Shareport thread in the forum main directory.

You might want to move there, also mention if it is one client causing issues or all three.

Thx I made another thread...
And the problem appears on all 3 computers, so I believe it's firmware/hardware problem on the routers side...

I already did although honestly I don't see how printer driver could have caused it as the problem disappears with router reboot...

Printer driver needs to connect to the virtual USB port (created by Shareport, pointing towards the actual USB port in the 655) in Windows.

Please refer to PC Shareport area of the forum.  You will see tons of issues from many people.....including myself.

I ended up getting a small Ethernet to USB print server to solve my headaches.  The cheaper units won't give you ink level feedback and such, but the do the printing job nicely.

Well I don't expect any advanced functions from shareport, just simple functionality...now I'm 100% happy with it WHEN IT WORKS, which is always just a few hours or days...

Also print-server isn't a solution for me as I often use all eth ports :-/

Another nice thing about shareport is that it works with USB Hub...I tried to have there printer, scanner and flash drive all connected and it still worked flawlessly BUT AGAIN JUST FOR ABOUT A DAY OR SO...

I have the same problems on home network with several family laptops and desktops using a Canon MP830 printer/scanner/fax.  Users are Windows XP and Windows 7 mix.

I have found that if everyone remembers to "Disconnect" when finished printing, the problem does not seem to occur.  If someone is connected and "shuts down" or leaves their PC to go into "sleep mode", then the Shareport Utility freezes and the Router must be rebooted.  Also, if someone tries to connect before another user disconnects, the problem can occur.

I will concentrate on the untried:

Suggest you try permutations of unicasting/multicasting/PnP to poll to verify the connection is alive.  One of them may fix the problem.

Also, I would suggest that the culpret may be the printer itself going into torpor (sleep mode).  If you can bypass sleep/power saving mode, it just may solve the problem.

Printer is configured to autoconnect and it disconnects automatically after the print job is done...so that doesn't solve the problem for me :-(

Sorry but I don't understand what you mean...what shall I try to do?

Hi Wilda,

Simply solution. Remove the printer from the Port on the Router. Plug the printer into a port on a Wired Computer. Either share the printer or you can buy a Wireless Printer and they have Wireless All-in-One units as well.
