I currently have 2 hard drives installed, both Segate Barracudas. The first drive installed was a 500GB. A second drive (1.5GB) was installed later. The second drive was formatted by the 321 and mirrors the original showing up as a 500GB drive. I expected that. I am using RAID 1 which is supposed to make a clone of each other.
Now, I want to replace the 500GB with a 1.0Tb drive to increase the overall storage space. The question is: how do I do that and not destroy the current data on the installed 1.5TB, but also get it to show as a 1.0TB drive to match the new drive. Will the current 1.5TB drive alter its configuration to equal the size of the new drive? Or, do I need to do something else to make both drives equal to the new, larger drives capacity? Here is what i want to do:
500GB + 1.5TB = Current configuration
1.0TB + 1.5TB = New configuration
The new configuration will hopefully show that both drives are at least 1.0TB in size without losing the current data stored. I did do the hardware upgrade when I bought the larger, second drive and I remember that it stalled at 94%. I left it alone for a few days and then noticed that it was now showing both drives at 500GB.
I was thinking I could remove both drives and reformat the current 1.5TB drive using the 321. Then load the new, 1.0TB drive. I assumed this would make both drives show as empty, but also show them as 1.0TB drives. I could then just copy the data from the original 500GB hard drive to the 321 through my PC. Would that work as my best option?
Other suggestions? Thanks in advance.
