Randomly Releasing Renewing IP address
« on: March 24, 2008, 10:55:18 AM »

My only complaint so far with this router is my random conflicts with it releasing and renewing my ip address in the middle of downloading files from the net, playing on xbox live, or randomly just browsing. First I thought it was my linksys cable modem so i replaced it with a motorola surfboard sb5101. Same issue with both. I have have rev a3 by the way. All of my home networking and media streaming is perfect. I was just wondering if any one has come across this issue. Oh and Comcast is my provider. I have tried all the firmware version including the beta and all of them have this issue for me.  It can happen every couple of days to every half hour which is really annoying.  Wired or wireless I have gotten the same results and the log on my cable modem doesn't show any error messages. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Easy to fix, I think. Go to Network Settings and assign a static ip address using DHCP Reservation...  Al

Then don't use DHCP reservation. Just assign the node a static IP.

You said HW REV A3. What firmware revsions are you using?

On the topic of randomly releasing renewing IP Addresses, everytime I boot up my computer, a Netgear Storage Central Partition Drive is mapped to the Computer and acts like a Hard Drive attached to the computer. In the Router Logs, it makes reference to the Storage Central Partitions being assigned to a specific IP Address it already had.

What does [WARN] mean in this context?

Now I don't have the problem of random disconnects, because in Network Settings, I changed the Lease Time from 3 hours to 7 days or 10080 minutes in length.

But what I don't understand is the mapped Hard Drive partitions, have only a maximum of 1 day lease instead of 7 days. How come?

SPI, the Router Firewall is off, as I use the McAfee Personal Firewall Plus on all computers.

Warn means warning, that is the logging level these messages are appearing as.

That's up to your NAS, it is not an issue with the router if your PC is getting the correct lease time.  It is probably a value hard coded into your NAS, and since the DIR-655 appears to be granting it the same address every time it shouldn't be effecting connectivity.

Well its not my pc losing the ip address. It is the router randomly releasing and renewing the ip address. The Connection time will go from like 3 hours, release and renew ip address in a few seconds and resest to 0. This is what is causing all my internet and xbox live issues. I hope that makes sense.

Kill the SPI and change the NAT ENPOINT Filters to independent.

Ok I tried your suggestions with the same results. Now I have just tried changing my wireless protection to wep, g only and not broadcasting the ssid. This seems to be working better but I do not like using wep. Is it possible that WPA could be causing my headache?

Hi gener1c,

Have you adjusted the Lease to 7 days or 10080 minutes in the Router Settings? After you log in, click on Setup and finally Network Settings.

The Lease is the DHCP Lease you are looking for. Change it to 10080 minutes.

I have changed the lease time to 7 days. Its just some times it will reset every hour or so.
