Is it Broken?
« on: September 18, 2010, 08:49:27 AM »

So yesterday I was on the internet fine, playing xbox online, watched some videos w.e. I woke up this morning and my internet was unresponsive i couldnt get google to even open up . So i went to take a look at it and the wires were a little loose which got me google, but nothing else. I still cant even get into my routers set up page (yes i am entering in the right ipaddress) so i decided to just unplug it and connect my computer directly to my modem and it is not working perfectly. Oh and also my led screen doesnt work but that is besides the point.

Do i need a new router? :'(

Is this a new router or how old? What Firmware version is currently on it? What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable? How are you connected? Wired or wireless? If wireless, what wireless mode are you set currently on?

"Oh and also my led screen doesnt work but that is besides the point."

Wait...whuuuu? That is very much relevent to your problem. How is the LED screen not working? Does it not turn on at all? As for it not working, and bypassing it and getting your internet, that does NOT mean the router is broken. It may be, the fact the the LED doesn't power up makes it sound like its failing Post, but lots of things can cause that to happen and have it not be the router. So lets focus on the LED, did it stop working when you had the problem?

To answer your first question it was about 6 months ago, firmware 1.21NA on a bell line and wired which is strange

The led screen doesnt respond to any button clicks and if i press it a couple of times, in no matter which order, the led begins to show a faint outline of an image; i think its a trace of the outline.

6mths...and the display doesn't come one...might get ahold of DLink CS and see if they can get you a new one.

As for the internet going south, your running v1.21NA. That version was known to have issues. Internet and Wireless hangs and random reboots. It was not a good version. If the router is still working aside the display, you can update to v1.23NA and I'm sure you will find it works better. V1.22NA corrected v1.21's issues. 1.23 is just the follow on and still works great. I would try the update and see how it goes. So Bell Line is a Cable or DSL ISP?

I would test the hardware first. Since the display is a OLED, any loss of brightness, or lack there off, would most likly be caused by a lack of current. If it happened suddenly (as compared to being a defect) it sounds like your router was hit by a surge. Take that with the fact you can't access the gateway...yea, I would contact D-link, but I dont think the warranty covers surges.
