My DGL-4500 shows offline on display?
« on: September 19, 2010, 01:34:52 AM »

I have had many routers over the years and plenty of experience.  It seems that no matter what brand you get, routers/switches have a very limited lifespan.  My IP/comcast just updated our service and since they have done that I have noticed strange things happening to our service.  I did tests for over an hour with the(4500), hooked up an old D-link router(524) and it works fine.  So it's not the service and now troubleshooting my 4500.  It appears that the internet port quit working?  I purchased this unit about 2 years ago.  Hardware Version-A1/Firmware 1.02  It seemed to be working fine so I didn't see a reason to update firmware.  I am thinking I need a firmware update now.
I cannot update the firmware without a working internet port.  Any Ideas?  Could there be another issue that would cause the internet input port to not pass signal from the cable box?

In short, yes. But "Need more input Stephanie".  ;D

What was the testing you did? You say it has happened when Comcast change your service, how so? And what strange things have you noticed? And last, you can update the firmware without the Internet port. Connect direct to the modem, download the file. Connect to a LAN port on the 4500, 192.168.0.1 into the gateway, and upload the file manually. But before doing that, answer the first questions.

I would not update FW until you can verify the functionality of the ports fully. FW will not fix a physical port issue. I presume you have powered off the unit and let it sit for a min or 2? After that, doing a full reset of the unit using the reset button in back? Check all cables. Try different cables, and yes, tell us what you get on your network connection if you connect directly to the ports with a pc. Does it show disconnected on the PC? Try using a different PC to be sure. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the response...If the hardware internet port is not working, no matter what I do it will not pass signal.  I have tested another router and it is working fine, so my comcast is fine.  Comcast was updating their infrastructure and we were having dropout issues for a few days, now working fine.  Unfortunately, I think this DGL-4500 is dead.  I will give you an update once I try hooking it up again and re-setting again.  I let it sit for a few days un plugged.  Meanwhile I am using an old 10/100 router Dlink 524 and it is working fine.  The reason I quit using this router is because of the bandwidth and I have 2 ports not functioning.  What is it with ports going dead on these routers?  The last three routers I have had, has had ports go bad on me.  It is plugged into a very nice power source...I don't get it?

You might want to try using a external switch coming off the router. Might help some. Especially if you have losts of devices connecting. I have a 24Pt Gb switch coming off mine. The only things I have direct to the router is the 2 xboxes.
I would definitely call up DLink and get anther one though. Let us know.

Hmm, if it does die in a simular fashion, you might want to have a electrician check your ground and for power spikes. Also, ask comcast how your flaps look on the modem. Unless your disco/reco ethernet, there is really no reason a port should just go except for a power issue of some kind. Even if were talking age. The chipset is more likly to go first before the Ethernet ports. Atleast get a good surge suppressor. I really like this one. Solid, built to last, and isolated filter banks which is CRUCTIAL if were talking about something to plug network equipment into.
