I have a 2Wire 3800HGV-B U-Verse Residential Gateway (RG) and a D-Link DIR-655 router.  I am choosing to mount the DIR-655 behind the RG and use the DIR-655's wireless (and wired) routing capabilities. I am disabling  the wireless capabilities of the RG.  I have Cat-6 originating from one of the four ethernet LAN outlets on the RG; if I terminate the Cat-6 at one of the four ethernet LAN outlets on the DIR-655 and disable the DIR-655's DHCP server, the DIR-655 functions  beautifully as a bridge while the RG maintains its functionality as the internet gateway and DHCP server.


I would like to use the DIR-655 as a full-fledged wireless/wired router (rather than just bridge) and  degrade the RG to be "just a modem."  I have done the following:   Take the Cat-6 (originating from one of the four LAN ethernet outlets on the RG) and terminate it at the WAN input of the DIR-655; assign the DIR-655 with "DMZ-Plus" (wide open) firewall settings on the RG.  (I have also enabled the DHCP server on the DIR-655 for routing purposes, FWIW.  It seems I cannot -- nor should not -- disable the DHCP on the RG, as the RG *must* assign an IP to the DIR-655 for the DIR-655 to transmit the internet to/from the RG through DIR-655 WAN port. I also [presently] still feed my U-Verse television receivers through Coax originating at the RG which requires the RG's DHCP.)


As a bridge (RG LAN to DIR-655 LAN), everything works great.  As a router (RG LAN to DIR-655 WAN), downloading works well but uploading ranges from dreadfully slow to completely stopped.  I have tried both straight-through Cat-6 and crossover Cat-6 from the RG LAN to DIR-655 WAN for the "router" configuration, and both fail in "uploading".


In order to use the DIR-655 as my router and the RG as "just a modem", what additional must I do to both the RG and/or the DIR-655 to get the uploading working?

Hi clmssun,

On your 2Wire Modem, you must give the DIR-655 a Static IP Address. In the Firewall Settings, you must set the Firewall to Minimum Security (Low). Also move the DIR into the DMZ Zone of the 2Wire.

Also plug the WAN port of the DIR-655 into the 1st Lan Port of the 2Wire Modem.

Finally plug everything through the DIR and not the 2Wire.

This is not correct. The RG would assign the same public, external IP it gets from AT&T to the device in the "DMZPlus" mode. No static IP assignment is necessary.

I have similar, but a little more complicated setting, and it works fine (except some problems I am having lately with the DIR-655 unit itself, why I came visiting the forums in the first place).

RG sets DIR655 is in DMZPlus mode. Wireless is off in RG (but must have DHCP to serve the televisions and the VOIP ATA box). In DIR655, DHCP server is off. linux box provides DHCP services to the entire network. The above setup works for me even if I move the DIR655 out of DMZPlus mode (however, bittorrent clients complain a lot. I don't use them much - so it's okay).

That said, I don't really know why you are having upload problems. I must say I regret getting UVerse. I had AT&T's plain old DSL service for many years. Only 1.5mbps DL, even more sucky UL, that was. But it was a dumb, stable pipe. I miss it.

I do not have need for esoteric services like gaming, p2p etc., and can't tell how they might work. But I do massive uploads (from the linux box, over encrypted rsync for remote offsite backup), and it works as advertised.

I have Verizon FIOS and while you are correct that no Static IP Assignment is necessary, the Verizon ActionTec Router, still assigns an IP Address to the D-Link DIR-655 A3 Router of mine. In order to move the DIR-655 Router into the DMZ Zone, you need to use the IP Address from the ActionTec Router. In turn, that IP Address is what the DIR-655 sees. It never sees the Browser IP Address.

One can't place a Device into the DMZ Zone, without an IP Address assigned by a Router.

Could it be because of Qos? Under -Advanced - QoS Engine...

WAN TRAFFIC SHAPING
Enable Traffic Shaping:
Automatic Uplink Speed :
Measured Uplink Speed :
Manual Uplink Speed :

Those settings could be limiting your upstream. Try entering your actual uplink speed found on your RG or turning off WAN Traffic Shaping.


djstyles (I saw your other thread)... Clmssun's instructions here works well (I already had this configuration before I found this forum, I was just looking for a firmware update for my 655).


I've only noticed one problem. Going through the 655 I get slower downstream. About 3-4Mbps slower compared to if I'm just connected directly to the RG.

That's a bummer. But the speed is comparable to Comcast which I just switched over from.

You don't for Modems. It is not necessary. It is necessary when plugging into another Router.

I have been reading the forgoing posts with great interest.  Today AT&T is forcing me to switch to using there uverse box instead of my Motorola 2210 modem.  When the switch takes place, I want to configure and connect my DIR-655 behind the uverse box.  The posts seem to provide conflicting information on the best way to do this.  Can one of you experts clear this up for me?

This forum has been very helpful in the past for keeping my DIR-655 and DNS-323 devices working properly.
