DNS-323 Outbound traffic
« on: October 05, 2010, 03:52:54 PM »

Does anyone have any idea why my DNS-323 would be constantly accessing external networks (Internet)?  I was checking my firewall logs and I noticed excessive outbound requests coming from the DNS-323.  I have the BT feature enabled, but I don't have any active torrents.  I can't think of any other reason this thing would be checking the Internet.  I blocked outbound traffic for it on my firewall and everything seems to be working, but I'm still curious about what it might be trying to do.

Any ideas?

Much appreciated.

Any idea what port?

Time server, DNS lookup, BT app..... any or all of these could be active and polling teh network depending on your setup.

Hey dosborne, thanks for helping out with this.  Good call on checking the port.  I didn't even think to look.  It's not a single port.  Here's a sample of a few it has used: 6681, 40344, 51859, 10008 etc'.  That makes me think it is the BT app'.  What are your thoughts?

Thanks again.

It definitely appears to be the BT app.  I uninstalled it and all unexpected traffic ceased.  I also found a related thread that seems to confirm this.  Here's the thread: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=11383.msg73146#msg73146

Thanks again for the help.

Of course it is your BT app!  When you sign up download for BT you are by definition allowing your computer to send out whatever you have downloaded to other BT users.
