Author Topic: Can router give my PC preferential treatment over bandwidth-hogging roommate?  (Read 14366 times)

Just want to know what settings/services need to be set up on the router so that it gives all of my net traffic top priority over anything my roommate is doing.  She is a complete loon who spends all day/night streaming videos about faked moon landings, aliens building the Great Pyramid of Giza, or how the CIA was behind 9/11.  This tends to throttle our otherwise generous bandwidth.  Even online gaming deserves to take precedence over such junk, especially since I'm footing the bill.  So, is there some way of telling the router that my computer is El Numero Uno when deciding how to dole out the bandwidth without actually cutting her off completely?  Btw, each computer has an IP reservation, in case that helps matters.

Any and all assistance is sincerely appreciated.  And I promise never to try a childish stunt like this on any of you, should we end up being roommates someday...   ;D

I think you want to use the WISH feature. I use it to give higher priority to my ReplayTV units. To use it, it's best to also set the DHCP server to give the same IP address to your PCs based on their MAC addresses. You need that because the WISH setting is based on IP addresses. Set your IP address for Video and your roommate  for the least QOS.

Bye.

If you configure basic QoS rules and give your IP a lower priority it should be pretty kosher.

Below is an FAQ that should help with writing the rules.  More likely than not WISH by itself will not be the biggest help in this scenario.

I am able to control bandwidth priority solely and strictly through QoS. You will need to read the guidance provided with the web interface, but it works without using WISH.

WISH is QoS purely for the wireless interface with prebuilt classification.  If you have problems with bandwidth between wireless clients use WISH, if you need to control the bandwidth to the interweb use QoS.

Ah, that reminds me.  I should have mentioned that she is not using the wireless.  (I mentioned she's a total conspiracy loon, right?)  She's connected to the router physically, in ethernet port 1.  I, however, am using wireless (11n).  So, basically, I'm wireless yet physically no more than 6 feet away from the router while my roommate is all the way at the far opposite end of the apartment and runs a CAT-5 all the way over here.  That alone should prove what a total whack-job she is...

So QoS is the way to go here?  Really appreciate the insights.  I just couldn't be sure which way to go and for some reason I've been wary of Wish and have left it off since I bought this router.  So this should work out nicely!  Would the following basic "QoS Engine Rules" setup effectively maintain this priority for any situation/application/port, or is there something wrong in this setup that I'm not seeing?

Name = Me
Priority = 1
Protocol = Any
Local IP Range = 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.4  (.2 is reserved for "Jekyll" when I boot Mac OS X, .3 is "Hyde" when I boot to Windows, and .4 is my iPod Touch)
Remote IP Range = 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255

Name = Roommate
Priority = 255
Protocol = Any
Local IP Range = 192.168.0.5
Remote IP Range = 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255

(Any additional parameters not mentioned are greyed out when these settings are used.)  How's that look?  :-\

Hey I wired my entire house to avoid using wireless even though it was already in place, then again I am a little bit of a loon.

I would try priorities of 128 and 192, such extremes may crush her too much.

Is setting it to Priority "1" and Priority "2" not enough ? Why use 128 and 192 ?

An agent who works with this product may be able to explain better, but my understanding is that consecutive priorities represent so little difference as to not be helpful and the full range represents too much difference.

My specific numbers were chosen because I believe in the powers of 2 for all my tech needs.

2^8 - 1 = 255 = 11111111 = number of values
2^7      = 128 = 10000000 = half value
2^6      = 64   = 01000000 = quarter value

This also puts the values at quarter value distance placed right after the half value to leave room for lower priority applications that may arise in the future.

I think I understand that... Another explanation would help though.

I assume the lower the number the higher the priority, correct ?

So if I needed to assign priority for four different devices it would go like this ? (Are these numbers okay?)

32 Priority One (XBox) When the XBox is in use computers aren't other than idle bandwidth being used.
64 Priority Two (My Laptop)
96  Priority Three (Jake's Laptop)
128  Priority Four (Visitor's Laptop)

Uhhh...  You smart.  Me like you.  Me go hit rock with stick now.   Hitting rock, good game.  ;D

Sure, setting my priority at 1 and hers at 255 may seem a wee bit too extreme, but you've neglected one very important factor: I despise her.  I despise her with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, all burning in their prime.  It has consumed my soul and turned me into a tiny, petulant child.  I will not have the bandwidth I pay for go towards fueling her insane conspiracy beliefs anymore!  Not while there are massively-sized torrents out there desperately begging to be leeched (and, of course, seeded)!  However, this is worthy info to have in the future, should another person move in and, being found to be of lesser annoyance and therefore not entirely unpleasant to my eye, is deserving of a less-severe prioritizing.   ;)

Thanks for all of this info, everybody!  Y'all have been a big help!

[EDIT:]  What's with the "exploitive deleted"?  They can't even spell "expletive" and yet they have the audacity to tell me that h*te is a bad word?!?

Given what I just read, I only have one question, as I know from that description that you are a gamer or at least a sci-fi/fantasy fan (read latent gamer).

So what class do you play?
