I have two iPhones that connect to my DIR-655. On those iPhones I am running software that requires UDP port 14666 be open in order that the software packages on each phone be able to communicate to one another.
I get the concept of allowing communications from the outside, on a particular port, to be forwarded to a given IP address. And I think this would work wonderfully if I were communicating between an iPhone on my network with an iPhone on another network. But I have two iPhones behind the firewall, and for some reason, they are unable to communicate to one another.
The closest I have come is when I setup port forwarding and make the 14666 route traffic to the IP address of one of the iPhones. When I do that, I keep seeing the other phone briefly connecting, and then dropping the connection. But short of that, I never see connectivity between the two devices.
I am confused as to why the router would have any dealings with traffic between two computers on my internal network, on any port - wouldn't that be restricted/controlled by the devices themselves?
In any event, the router evidently does have an impact, and I am at a loss to understand how I can have port 14666 open between these two Wi-Fi devices. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Neil
