DNS-323 Won't connect
« on: October 15, 2010, 12:09:51 PM »

I have had my DNS-323 for over a year and no real problems till a few days ago.  When I booted my PC it had a network connection error for the storage.

I noticed that the Network connection icon on the unit & on my router are no longer lit.

I've tried resetting the DNS and I've tested all ports on the router to verify that they all work using my laptop to connect to the internet.  I've also made sure that the network cable is good.

Is there anything that can be done or is the unit toast?

Sounds like the unit is done.

One last thing to check though - if you have anything with a gigabit port - connect it directly, just in case you somehow managed to get the port set to 1000 rather than auto.

A reset to defaults should have fixed that though.

Hello,

I just have the same problem !!

My network is not "seeing" the 323. And the network lights on the 323 are not lit. Also my right hand driver ( front view ) light is "white".

I have also check all ports on the router and all work fine. I did change my router a few days back from a tosted Linksys to a Belkin, so I also " factory reset" both router and 323 thinking that was the problem. No luck.

BUT .... when I connect directly the 323 to my ethernet port on my PC ( no router involved ) ... the network lights UP on my 323. I don't know how to "see" the 323 from my PC directly so I am not able to navigate thru it.

Any ideas on this ??? I am been reading a lot on this for the past week .. but getting a few solutions and none on the "white drive light".

Thanks for your help ....... Hopefully my 323 is not dead !!!!!!

A newbie without a clue !!!!

Unlikely that your NAS is "dead" if it works when connected to your computer. How do you mean "White light"? The LED can be blue and/or orange.

If your NAS doesn't work with your router, but it does connected to your PC, it MUST be the router or cable.

The LED is a bi-color LED, and displays blue or yellow, however if both colors are displayed simultaneously, depending on the duty cycle of the driving signal the color may appear as pink/white/purple - the circumstances under which this occurs are not defined by D-Link, but I believe can be considered an indication of an error condition.

Thanks for the response ... actually the LED light it's completly "white" in color on the left side and solid blue on the right side. And if I remove the front cover the light is "white" as a house bulb !! But actually I think this is a faulty Drive or something I'm really not too worried right now ( just a movie stored in that drive )

I do want to know if you guys have any advise on the "network" issue I have on my 323. After I post this I tried on a different router (lend from a friend ) with a different CAT5 and CAT6 cables on all 4 ports of the router. Something interesting that might help "or not " lol .... If I unplug the power sorce on the router and plug it again ... the network light on the 323 lights up for about 10 seconds ... and then It goes down again.

Any takers ?

Thanks

Plug the DNS-323 directly into your computer, and then set a static ip address on the computer (192.168.0.30 is a good address for this), now see if you can access the DNS-323 admin webpage at 192.168.0.32, if you can, go to the setup/lan menu, and make sure the speed is set to auto.

If you can't see the webpage, use the reset pin switch on the back to reset to factory defaults and try again.

I would also suggest to remove the assumed-defective drive.

Maybe it spins up when connected to your PC and you might even able to recover the lost file with a Unix filesystem driver (there are some freeware Read-only drivers and even one or two r/w ones) or a bootable Linux CD (some PC newspapers include emergency boot-up CDs).

Thanks,

@ fordem :

I did what you told me and I was able to navigate thru the 323 and the link speed was set to AUTO. ( At least is not dead !!! ). And I did this:

- Factory reset 323. ( just in case !! ) It worked fine connected to my PC. IP's as you recomended.
- Navigate thru 323. Set Up/Lan = Link speed was AUTO !!
- Revert PC IP to DHCP. And test it.
- Turned off everything ( 323, PC, Router ).
- I connect all the cables back on ... PC, 323 thru the router.
- Network light on 323 does not light up and we're back as were we started !!! ( SADLY )
- More ideas ???  PLEASE !!! and Thanks.

@ HSishi

It seem like the 323 reads the "defective" drive as a new one and wants to format it !!! Anyway there is nothing important on it ... Thanks.

Other thoughts ?????? Damn me for newbie !!!

Mh ... ok ... try another port on the router then. Maybe the LAN port is either turned off (some router have energy management features) or defective.
If you can do a closer look on the port, check if there's something in the connector (a "dust rat" or other kinds of dirt) and all 8 contact wires are in good shape (compare it with the other ports; if there's something wrong, you should be able to see it).

Try also setting the AUTO negotiation to "10 MBit half duplex". This setting is the most stable link speed and the router should work with it.

So, all ports on the router have been tested and all of them are working.

I changed the AUTO Link to the 100 Mbit ( those are the only ones available on my 323 ). And I connect it to the router and WORKED !!!! Great !!! Thanks.

BUT ( really ?? ) If the 323 is reset/turn off or similar .... I loss the connection again. And I have to start all the process again. I usually don't use the 323, only on weekends so I don't want to have it ON all the time.

Do you think there's something to set up on the router ? By the way it is a BELKIN N+ F5D8235-4. I have also test it on a Belkin N1 Vision ... same results.

I also tried to set up a static IP on the 323 to see if this solves the issue ... no luck !!!

- Now I have acces to 323 thru the router on Link 100 Mbit, AUTO doesn't work.
- Everytime I turn OFF 323 I loss connection thru the router and need to fix it with PC-323 connection.

Anything else you might think off ?  What part Am I missing ???

Thank you guys,

PS" After formatting the faulty drive ... the "white" light dissapear.. so back to solid blue. BAD news I was mistaken and that was the disk with all my movies .... LOL ( not to cry ). I'm going to miss my Tinto Brass movie collection......   :(

Well ... do NOT store anything new on the formatted drive. Try to restore the data; there are alot of tools around which should work with Unix partitions (emergency boot CD's / DVD's with Linux for example).

In most cases the formatted data is not lost, just the organisation directories are overwritten. You need spare space to recover them; the recovery tools won't write on the device or partition from where the recovered files come from.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advise HSishi.

Regarding the connection issue using the router ... any other ideas ?

Why the 323 lost connection with the router everytime I turn it OFF or reset it ?? Witk Speed Link set to 100Mbits .... AUTO Speed link does not work at all.

Happy New year .....

Ok...let me tell you guys another thing I discovered today .....

I found the dead router ( internet is the "dead" issue ) the router is a Linksys WRT160N and just for fun I plug the 323 on it and it WORKED !!!! out of the blue ... I factory reset the 323 ( yes .. once agian ) and also factory reset the Linksys Router ... hook the up again and it worked right away.

Any thoughts on why it does not work on the Belkin router ???

Ip on Linksys 192.168.1.1
Ip on Belkin  192.168.2.1

Would this have something to do with it ??? I'm running 1.09 on the 323. Would a change to 1.08 make any difference ???

PS' Just to let you know I am still UNABLE to have my 323 working with the Belkin Router. And the Linksys have a dead internet connection ( lightning strike on my house and it died !!! )

Again .. thanks for your help.

Hmmm ... looking at the IP's it looks like a subnet issue.

A standard home network has the subnet mask "255.255.255.0", means every LAN client IP has identical first three octets.
Maybe your problems occured because you had different IP's.

Set the DHCP IP range of your Belkin router to 192.168.1.* and try again.

Oh, just being curious: Your PC's network adapter uses DHCP also or does it have static IP assigned?
