Port Opening
« on: October 26, 2010, 12:01:00 PM »

Hello,

I recently ran into a problem with my router where the internet connection would disappear whenever I opened a certain port.

Thing is, I'm trying to host my own server for Minecraft, and whenever I open the ports (25565) needed to play I would have no internet, but would stay connected to the network.

Also, I think that it's caused because I have two routers, one in 192.168.0.1 and the other in 192.168.1.1

I only tried to open to ports on 192.168.0.1, and not the other because I'm unsure how.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Help is greatly appreciated.

First Minecraft? Go X!! Hehe.

Two, need more info. What router is the 192.168.1.1? If you have two routers, but with NAT, you need to set the first one to transparent of bridge mode.

I had the same issues kind of.

I was trying to port forward so i could host a server but i ran into a issue of port was forward both on DSL-526B Modem (192.168.1.1) and my DIR-615 (192.168.0.1) router and it not working. so i could not find a bridge option and been a noob at some stuff i disabled the DHCP on my modem. So good thing is the ports are forward bad thing is i can't access the modem through 192.168.1.1 wtf have i done :s i know i can just reset the modem (internet works fine btw) i just like to see connection details and stuff and can't do this through DIR that i know of. Any help with fixing my issues so i can see the GUI for both?

It's recommended that you bridge the DSL modem do that the built in router is turned off and just hands traffice over to the 615 router. Doing this lessens the NAT issues when having 2 routers on the same line. This 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems for accessing sites, servers and gaming. When you bridge the DSL modem in effect you can't access the modem any more as it's DHCP server is turned off while in the mode.

The only way to see if you are getting internet is by the 615 routers web page on the Status/Device Info page. Check the WAN section for IP addressing information. If the DSL modem is bridged correctly and the router is setup correctly, this section will be fully filled in. If you don't see any information here, means that the router might not be set up correctly, or the DSL modem isn't setup correctly, a bad cable could be on the line between these devices or the ISP signal has dropped for some reason which is causing the modem not to hand off any traffic if this happens thus the router will not display any information here. The routers logs may display this information too, something like PPPoE link down or not connected. Means the router isn't getting any information from the modem. This doesn't mean the router is the problem either.

So it's best to use the DSL modem in bridged mode. Don't worry that you can connect to it or see status on the modem. Use the 615 router for all your status and network traffic management.

Make sure your Primary and 2ndary DNS Ip addresses are filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual, as sometimes they don't get auto-filled in.

Use the 612 features for setting up ports and QoS items that you need. It's recommended to use static IP addresses for all of your connecting devices. Helps in troubleshooting and each device will always have the same IP address.
