DHCP IP reservation question
« on: April 15, 2008, 11:22:40 AM »

When one device (an ATA in this case) is setted in DHCP IP reservation mode, still the router release device after some time (1440 minutes is the default)?

My question is bcs I have an ATA Grandstream HT-488 attached in my DIR-655 in DHCP IP reservation mode. After some time (I never measured it) ATA loose VoIP account registration and I canīt connect again... maybe router is releasing ATA and refuse re-connect? Just wondering.... Thx

Do you have to power cycle the ATA to get VoIP back? Why not.. just static ATA IP in device, making sure to leave it outside of the routers configured DHCP Range?

Yes, I need to turn it off and on again... do you mean make DHCP - IP reservation with a IP number outside DHCP range?

Oh, ...no when we speak of reservation, were talking about the DHCP Server side options (in router WebUI). I am actually talking about hard coating at the ATA! Is this a possibility? If so, then, taking into account that the DHCP Server has an configurable IP Range that it can hand out for it's subnet... we would want to hard coat ATA with an available IP address that is outside of that configured "Range".

In fact, in ATA I only could set this way for LAN port... not WAN port... what do you think about increasing lease time as much as the router support?

Increasing Lease time will only denote if the problem is DHCP communication related... so, increasing it will help! If problem still occurs, but less frequently then it fair to say that the problem is related to something with DHCP functionality/compatibility.

After reviewing internet material, on your ATA (User Manual for Firmware version 1.0.3.86)... we could have unique situation/compatibility with ATA's 10Mbps Ethernet connection and the LAN port of DIR-655; auto-negotiation related incompatibilities over time.

On the ATA, I have also found that WAN port can be set to STATIC, vise it's default of DHCP; You'll need to connect to ATA over Analog Phone and Dial "***", then, follow the voice prompt (enter "01") via it's IVR menu. For further information please see page 9 at the following URL of http://www.grandstream.com/user_manuals/HT488_User_Manual.pdf

First of all, many thx TaVARUS for you effort in helping me...

Configuration for HT-488 can be done with WebUI too, teh "***" is for "talk-configuration" menu.

But the more relevant info is: I discover that if my internet connection fails (this happens a lot, coz I have a crap ISP), the ATA losse registration (of course) but when internet backs, the ATA doesnīt register in VoIP server again... so, if I turn off DIR-655 and then turn it on again afetr few seconds, ATA register successfully again... this can point you any conclusion? ???

Who is your ISP? What type of connection (DSL/Cable/FiOS)? If you ISP gives your router a different Public IP Address everytime it re-establishes it WAN connection, then it stands to reason, that the ATA doesn't have awareness of it's outer connection, or does not send a keep-a-live with outer IP information. I would contact ATA support to find/assist with the particulars of the noted problem ... all in hope/attempt to have there next firmware/code for the ATA device have implementation/resolution in this type of situation.
