DNS-323 still slow after 1.09 firmware upgrade
« on: November 14, 2010, 06:52:40 PM »

New DNS-323, second NAS and first post.

I bought a DNS-321 a month ago...read some reviews that it was nowhere near gigabit speeds, I bought it...and yeah - it was really slow. I returned it. Went back after a month and got the DNS-323 pluged it, formated it as EXT3 and after setting up RAID1 I tested the speed - 10-12Mbytes/s...same as the DNS-321. OK I said..I upgraded the firmware to the latesst 1.09, same deal. I reformatted the drives with EXT2 and I got a little increase in speed up to 16Mbytes/s. but that's it. I played with the jumbo frame settings and this only slowed things down even more. I got all gigabit NICs and I got a Linksys E2000 Gigabit router, I cant blame it on the router cuz when I transfer 4gb or a 2gb file between my desktop and my laptop (gigabit lan also) I get average speed of 55-65Mbytes/s. I read so many different posts where a lot of people are getting slow performance also, but no practical solution to this problem. I've aslo changed the cable that connects the NAS and even tested it on a 3Com rack mount gigabit switch - no change in speed again. I'm using 2 Samsung 1Tb 7200rpm 32Mb Serial ATA 3.0Gbps

After all I wonder if its the NAS, the software that runs inside or the onboard NIC. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Speed has been discussed in MANY threads already. Start by reading this one http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=15337.0

I know. I already read many of them, but I couldn't find a post that says do this or change this setting so you can increase the transfer speeds. Too bad for a device that's on the market for so long. I know many people are OK with 10mbytes transfer rates, but not me. Lets be real, out of the box this NAS is nowhere close gigabit speeds. I like the device, I like the software on it and it has nice features, but the slow transfers are just make me wonder, why a gigabit NAS performes as a 100Mbits NAS?

Jolebole, as you find out yourself, you can get maximum transfer rates around 16MBytes/s (which BTW is slightly above FastEthernet speed). So why it is written nowhere how to increase transfer speeds of the DNS-323 above that mark? Simple answer: you can't. The DNS-323 is a great device which can do nearly anything you want. But nobody ever said that it is fast. Beeing fast is the thing it cannot do and that's because of its hardware limitations.

If you need a fast NAS you have to look for another one.

Well, after all it is a god NAS, not the fastest, but for a price of almost $200 it should be faster then 16Mbytes/s. It transfers 55Gb of data in 1 hour, streams 1080p video without a hiccup, but when you need to transfer something big, why wait for an hour when it can be done in 25 minutes.

Does any one have the box that the DND323 came in, I have mine and on the box it says this.

High Performance with Gigabyte Ethernet Connectivity: Up to 23MBps - Read and 15MBps - Write (182Mbps - Read and 120 Mbps - Write).

So from d-link them self's you can't get any faster.

You know, I'm gonna check that tonight. Anyways for the price of the DNS-323 I'll probably built me a small NAS PC with some left-over parts that will perform faster in any way.

I would be interested in your outcome. I can get my 323 transfer speeds to 12-15Mb/s. Transfer speed between computers is about the same. all cat6 10" cables on dir-825 router. It might be a network limitation not just 323.

Actually, those numbers were for the early "non jumbo frame" firmware, and it is possible to exceed them by as much as 20~50%, given optimum circumstances - however - apart from "my numbers are higher than yours" bragging rights, it serves no purpose, as you'll soon find that those "optimum circumstances" rarely occur naturally, and real world throughput will almost always be less, and often considerably less.

I get an avg of about 10-15mb/sec xfer on my gigabit network on my ds323 and ds321.
I'm backing up my entire ds321 onto my 2T usb 2.0 drive and I'm averaging 6.62MB/sec.

My synology Ds209 can transfer at the same speed as my esata drive - around 40-50+ MB/sec
so it's not the network or my computer setup.

These NAS are just slow.

I have an Asus motherboard Gig ethernet to a D-Link DIR-655 (Gig also) to my 323. I am using firmware 1.08.  Using an app called, LAN Speed Test (free version), it calculates a Write Rate of 142 Mbps and Read Rate of 165 Mbps.   That is exceeding the stated max for Write (120Mbps) and is close to Read (182Mbps).  I have not tweaked any settings, but always look to see if I am where I should be with performance.  The unit has been running extremely well for me.  Hopefully these numbers help others consider their setup and confirm my device's performance.  Any questions or tips are welcome.

I too just bought one of these and find the performance disappointing. I have GB ethernet throughout, with jumbo frames configured and working. I can do machine-to-machine transfers of 50-100 MB/s depending on which machines/drives. My main reason for choosing the DNS-323 was the GB ethernet support. The purpose of this NAS will be to serve up media to the rest of network (BD/DVD rips and music). And while the 15-20MB/s reads will work OK for that as long as more than one client isn't watching BD rips, moving all the media files to the NAS is going to take forever at 15MB/s.

If I had realized it was going to be so slow I probably would have just bought a port-multiplying eSATA enclosure to hang off one of the always-on machines. NAS seemed like a cleaner solution, but the performance hit isn't really worth it I don't think.
