Why do we never see any firmware updates?
« on: April 20, 2008, 05:50:07 AM »

Hi, (Sorry for my "bad English")

I've bought the D-Link DGL-4500 Gaming Router for like one month ago.

The reason why I bought it was simply because I rather hated our poor Linksys WRT54Gv5. Yeah, we had the "v5" which is quite useless. It gets overloaded quite often, no good support for DD-WRT firmware etc..

And since we are going to upgrade to fibreoptic network soon I couldn't stand having it any more.

So this time I was going to buy one of the best routers available, and since I' am a "Gamer" and I want the best performance when playing Age of Conan the D-Link DGL-4500 seemed like the best choice to make.

I've read lots and lots of reviews of the D-Link DIR-655, and they where all very good. The DIR-655 seemed like one of the best routers on the marked, it seemed most stable, handled most connections at once etc..

And since the DGL-4500 simply is the "Gaming" version of DIR-655, with 5GHz support and GameFuel I thought that nothing could be better than the DGL-4500. Or perhaps the DIR-855 would be, but as it get delayed all the time, and I'm not really needing the Dual-Band I didn't want to wait for it any more.

So then I receive my DGL-4500, and rather exited I install it and config / tweak it. And it worked quite good, though my mother had some issues with her wireless signal strength being much worse than with our WRT54Gv5, how on earth that is possible I don't know. We tried to tweak both the router and her computer, but nothing seemed to help. Also the SSID broadcast seemed to just disappear sometimes without any reason.

This was no issue for me, as I'm using cable and not wireless and I didn't notice any issues. So I simply disabled the WiFi on DGL-4500 and connected our old WRT54Gv5 to it so my family could connect wirelessley to the WRT54Gv5 while I am connected to the DGL-4500..

But it seems to me that the DGL-4500 got some small issues, and the firmware is far from perfect. And that makes me wonder why we never get any firmware updates?

The older DIR-655 get updates every now and then, and it uses almost identical hardware and firmware as the DGL-4500, so why don't we ever get any updates?

The v1.02 firmware was released in November 2007, that's quite a long time ago. Since then there has been not only one, but several updates for the DIR-655.

Are we DGL-4500 users being ignored?
It starts to feel like it..

There is not too many major issues with it, just a few small ones. You could try the beta firmware listed in the forum here if you'd like.

I know I can say that I have one major problem with the 4500.  The lack of ability to turn on MAC address filtering for WIFI only.  On the DGL-4300 you can do this, and it really would help me be able to plug any device into my network locally without an issue, while still being able to add another layer of protection to help keep people from easily wandering onto my wireless network here.

How about leaving the display on? How about fixing QOS? At least with my DGL-4500 if anyone gets on the internet my PING GOES THROUGH THE ROOF. Why? I have 8 meg down and 1/2 meg up. This router works worse than my old $50 Netgear router. I paid $170 and thought i would get better pings not worse...

PS- if its some troglodyte mistake I made PLEASE LET ME KNOW... Thanks!!!

The display can't be left on. It will burn in.  :-\
As for the QoS and the slow browsing speeds, there may be an issue with your modem.
Have you tried locking your Wan port speed to 10 or 100?

I wonder if the same trick that Pioneer uses with car audio systems might work?  Their display shows positive image for about 20 seconds and then reverse (negative) image for 20 seconds.  Flipping every 20 seconds or what every time interval you select, but you could also have a sleep mode (off during a certain time).
