WMV9 Videos

Downloaded some HD shuttle launch videos from NASA for testing.  They play like crud (skip like mad) through my DSM-520.  >:(

Anyone else care to try them out?  They are only about 50mb - 250mb each.

The 720p and 1080i are pretty much unwatchable for me. Haven't tried any others.

They run Ok if you have a wired connection.  They skip a lot if you are using wireless.

I'm running wired at 100Mbit, and they run like garbage for me.  I've even tried them off various devices via USB Direct.
I know the problem is the DSM-520.  At least with my unit anyhow.

If you are running a wired connection you should be OK. What are the PC specs of the PC used for serving the video? Do you have any anti-virus software on your PC?

I have 5 wired systems (3 are test systems) and results are the same.
USB Direct is no different with a 24MB/s flash drive.

Network is 10/100/1000 wired, and yes, I have tried different switches.

1st- Q6600 @ 3Ghz, 8GB, 1.5TB SATA (Raid 0), 8800 Ultra and SB Xi-Fi Xtreme Fatal1ty Pro on Vista 64 (Primary)
2nd - X2 4400, 2GB, 400GB SATA (Raid 0), 7800GTX, SB Audigy on XP Pro. (Secondary)

** Test Systems **
3rd - P4 3.2Ghz, 2GB, 750GB SATA, 7800GT, SB Audigy on XP Pro (No Firewall, No A/V)
4th - P4 3.2Ghz, 2GB, 300GB SATA, Radeon X800, on-board audio on XP Pro
5th - Dual 3.2Ghz Xeon (604), 8GB, 320GB SATA (Raid 0), on-board audio on 2003 Server

Other stuff plays okay, for the most part, but these NASA videos are terrible on my DSM-520.

No, and I have disabled them on other systems for testing and comparison. No noticeable differences were noted.

Hmm..Disabling Anti-virus software rarely work well and there still are usually some services running but these files should play without an issue. I just tested all of them from the NASA web page just to double check and did not have any issue.

You are running the latest firmware correct? We have has some updates since 1.02 that allow HD WMV support with 1.02 this was not possible.

Hmm..It looks to be an issue with your network or your unit for some reason is unable to process the data properly. If you believe it is to be your unit I would recommend contacting technical support.

I've set aside a few hours this morning and am going to be doing many tests with my DSM-520, network config and those NASA videos.  Hopefully I will find something.

Okay...  The test.

Linksys BEFSX41 router (current firmware/100% working)
Tested set of RJ45 patch cables.
A - P4 3.2Ghz, 2GB, 750GB SATA, 7800GT, SB Audigy on XP Pro (No Firewall, No A/V)
       (D-Link Meida Server 1.10, WMP 11 and TVersity)
B - P4 3.2Ghz, 2GB, 300GB SATA, Radeon X800, on-board audio on XP Pro
       (D-Link Media Server 1.10, WMP 11)
C - Gateway Laptop - Turion TL-52 1.6Ghz, 2GB, Integrated Radeon Express Series video, on-board audio on XP Pro
       (Used for RDC "Remote Desktop Connection" to A & B)

Playback on DSM-520 with A & B on all server software was terrible. (So choppy you can't hardly understand anything and video repeatedly pauses)

Playback on Gateway laptop THROUGH RDC connection.  Not very bad at all. Very watchable and enjoyable.

I reset the DSM-520 to factory defaults.  I updated the firmware via USB to v1.06.1 (just to try something else) and no change.  Reset v1.06.1 to factory defaults and no change. At this point I am going to have to say that my DSM-520 is defective.

I even connected it directly to my PC via a 6' crossover cable and nothing changed.

Well, according to DLink tech support (Level 2), the DSM-520 "WILL NOT PLAY WMV9 HD" without a lot of choppiness and they are not willing to issue me an RMA.

So... 

Added... Tech Support Lvl 3 say's it should play the NASA videos, but I have to email them to DLink for further testing.

They may think it is your network configuration and are unwilling to RMA the device because it cannot be determined defective like this over the phone. Did you request to be escalated to level3 and request a testing RMA?

Have you tried it on another network someplace else just to see if it made a differents there is always a chance something on your network is causing this issue?

I downloaded the .wmv files from the nasa site and they play great on my DSM-520 using the usb port  :D. I copied the files to a 1gb high speed usb2.0 drive and played them from there using usb direct. If you cannot play these files from a USB drive there may be a problem with your dsm-520.
