Can't get DIR-825 to broadcast over 54mpbs
« on: December 03, 2010, 06:25:06 AM »

Been working at this for a week now and it's time to ask for help and, yes, I have read the stickies!

I have my DIR-825 (type B, .202NA FW) all set up and wireless is working well, EXCEPT for the fact that inSSIDer consistently shows it broadcasting at only 54mbps, while it also shows several of my neighbors in the 150 and 300 ranges. I'm using a DWA 160 adapter in my notebook.

I have my 2.4 channel set for g&n, and my 5.0 channel at N only. both WPA2 and AES. WMM enabled. I've tried any number of combinations but nothing seems to work.

What am I be missing? If I was content with 54mbps, I'd have stuck with my old G router.

inSSIDer also makes mistakes.  Check for updates.  The newer inSSIDer should be working correctly.  Also, the router will list the "true" wireless speed on the web pages.

I may be mistaken, but is the channel width set at 40Mhz instead of 20Mhz?  Or at least Auto 20/40

You have to be at 40Mhz channel width to get 300mbps.

1. suggest maybe consider only using 5ghz 802.11n, and turn off the 2.4 stuff.. since it's less crowded band, you have a better chance of the router not stepping the speed down.
I'm not sure about the app your using to check your speed, but I just look in windows for the connection properties, and it's always over 100mbps using the 825 and an intel wireless card.
2. if you have to use 2.4ghz, consider looking at 2.05 firmware. I was having problems with my cell phones holding a stable 802.11n connection until I updated the firmware.
3. make sure, though should be default, that for some reason your wireless card in your laptop is not set to only g.

I'm guessing you're likely only getting a G connection if you're seeing those speeds.

The latest version of inSSIDer correctly reports DIR-825 speed and type(n) in XP. I forgot if there was a problem with Vista too, but it should be working there too.

I upgraded inSSIDer to the latest version and now it shows the proper 300 speeds.
I'm running Win 7, by the way.
