FW 1.09 problems w/UPnP AV Server and Firefly
« on: December 19, 2010, 12:09:56 PM »

Couple of problems:

 - Every time I try to enable Firefly my DNS-323 never finishes making the Firefly index, and my NAS becomes unavailable (Insufficient resources message appears) to access it.  This has happened twice.

Sequence:

 - Installed 1.09 FW

 - Restarted after FW install.

 - Added Firefly add-on

 - Firefly started building index...

 - Suddenly can't access the drive from my PC - insufficient resources was the message, I believe

 - Disabled Firefly

 - Enabled the UPnP AV server, and it took about 24 hours to refresh.

That was all yesterday and the day before.

Today:

 - Decided to re-try Firefly - same result as above, so disabled it again

 - Checked a while ago and it is re-refreshing (now at about 60% after not sure how long it's been going on, over a n hour or two since I checked it, I know that much).

Why the ongoing very long refresh on the UPnP AV server?

Why won't Firefly enable w/out hosing my access to the device?

I have two 500GB drives, about 35GB free.

Thanks!

This could be due to the volume of files being indexed. How many files is it having to sift through? Could you restrict the scan to just the directory containing your media? Is there perhaps a directory or file that the scan gets stuck on, perhaps because of strange filename characters?
In many cases, a factory reset after a firmware upgrade resolves strange issues.
Keep in mind the DNS-323 has 64MB RAM, of which some of that is occupied by Linux and services that enable the NAS to perform its function. It also has a slow processor.

Thanks...There isn't a way to restrict firefly as far as I can tell...w/out Firefly installed, there are no options on the iTunes Server Settings page and the "Launch Interface" button on that screen is disabled.

As soon as I enable Firefly, the launch button is enabled, but the index building seems to begin, and I get a message that I can't launch the interface while indexing is going on...  :)  Unless Firefly just knows where my media is (due to the "Media" folder name and file types), I'm not sure how/why Firefly is choosing what to index.

I was streaming the same files via the DNS-323 w/the previous FW version (1.05) I was running w/out issue, so I'm pretty sure it's not a file name issue.

I guess I may give the factory reset option a try...

Did the reset (from the router EWS inteface) and enabled Firefly again, and it's doing the database initialization again, but at least this time I can continue to access the drives while that is going on...I'll let it run for a while and see what happens.  It is weird that I can't provide any settings (like what directories I want to include) before Firefly does the database setup....

Spoke too soon...drive became inaccessible again, so had to disable Firefly plug in and restart the drive to get it back.

I would appreciate any advice on this...1.09 iTunes/Firefly is just not working for me.  I'm using version 1.0 of the Firefly add-on that I just downloaded in the last day or so from the Dlink site...is there a later, better version?

So no more advice?   :)

I'm stuck...appreciate any additional troubleshooting ideas, to track down what's going wrong.

I also have the same issue. I put in a ticket with the support team. I even have the UPnP AV server disabled, went through the whole rigmarole of restoring factory settings and tried again after a restart. Nothing ever comes up other than the dialog for "Initializing Firefly database, please wait". There is only 40 GB of data and most of it are movies and music. I have left it in this state for 36 hours with no change in the system - other than it eventually stops responding to even Ping.

I think that there must be a conflict between the 1.09 FW and the Firefly server application. There shouldn't be this many problems trying to get the two to work together. I don't even understand why restoring to factory defaults is a troubleshooting step - really it doesn't make sense as there is unlikely anything that would affect it. I think that the 1.09 FW itself is likely problematic. I had mediatomb installed previously and on 1.08 it worked nicely. On 1.09 it seems to go off on some random process and gets stuck and isn't found via my media servers. Reboot the DNS-323 and it is good to go again. A week goes by and its hung again. So I thought I would use the "Official" media servers. PITA. The UPnP server isn't found by the PS3, and it never seems to load correctly either as it takes a few reboots to get it to be available.

I'll let you know if D-Link support gets back to me with a solution.
