DIR-655 and Time Capsule Best Configuration?
« on: May 02, 2008, 10:49:24 AM »

If anyone can offer some advice to me on this, I would be most appreciative.

I have a DIR-655 that has been running nearly flawlessly with my MacBook and MacBook Pro for a number of months...Indeed I am inclined to keep the router as my primary router. However, I've been running into some problems since I purchased a Time Capsule--trying to get the two to work together at a reasonable speed (the Time Capsule, though connected to my network, runs very slow). From what I've found on the internet, the DIR-655 no longer supports WDS, which I believe might be enormously helpful to solving this problem (please correct me if I am mistaken). Is there another way to wirelessly bridge the two that I haven't tried that would solve this problem?

Might anyone have any advice as to how I should configure my network? If I can't get the two to play nicely, then I think I'll have to just stick with the Time Capsule (though its networking features obviously pale in comparison to the DIR-655).

I am going to start by admitting that I had not even heard of a Time Capsule until this post.

That said the best solution would be to just wire the Time Capsule to your DIR-655, it would provide the best speeds as they are both gigabit.  And since the Time Capsule is network storage there is no reason you need it to connect wirelessly.  Simply turn off DHCP on the Time Capsule and give it a LAN IP in the same network as your DIR-655 and connect them LAN<->LAN.

Thanks much for the advice. I have thought about doing that, but what I would prefer to do is to have the two spaced out (I currently have the Time Capsule in a different location so that I can eventually connect it to a new TV and/or receiver over the LAN).

Time Capsule says that it will configure using WDS. Was that not a feature of the DIR-655 at one point? If so, is there a means to restore it? Or a workaround perhaps?

WDS was a feature for a very short time (I believe only the initial firmware release on the initial hardware release, though I could be wrong).  There is no way to get it to work on a newer DIR-655, or even flash that firmware (if you had a copy) over a newer firmware version.

This device will never be a bridge to the DIR-655 so connecting it to a TV or receiver in another room will not be an option for you in the future.

To do that you would need a wireless bridge that does support WDS to connect to the Time Capsule.
