help configuring 655 inside home lan, not as internet connection
« on: December 23, 2010, 08:35:29 AM »

Can anyone help me configure DIR-655 as a router inside  a home lan.

Not as an internet connection but as the gateway for a wireless subnet on the home lan.

I'm guessing one would run a wire from another router that does have internet connection to the `internet' port on the DIR-655.   But I get confused where to go from there... Partly because I'm not sure the 655 can be even be made to work like that.

Can anyone advise me or provide a rough outline of how to go at something like that?

of you want to connect the 655 to another router that has internet services and use the 655 as an access point device, you could connect one of the LAN ports on the Internet router one of the LAN ports on the 655. From there you could still use the DHCP services on the 655 to set up IPs, however I think you'll have to make sure that you set primary and 2ndary DNS addressing to the IP address of the 1st router. So that it will know where to get internet traffic from and pass it along to any connected devices on the 655.

Should be very simple. You have a modem I take it..from your ISP? Then run the ethernet cable from that which carries the signal to the inbound ethernet on the 655. Then If you are gonna "hardwire" run an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the empty 1-4 connections. SOmetimes it takes a while for the modem to recognize things. You may have to unplug...plug back in few times. But Im using three dif types of OS..and two  laptops wireless as well asn ipad, and iphone and a kindle..IT SEES EM' all!!
