DIR-655 Rev B. 2.00 DDNS and NTP time conflict
« on: December 23, 2010, 09:50:02 AM »

Hooked up this router the other day to replace my old Linksys G - which has been bulletproof for 8 years. I am now wondering if I made a mistake with this unit.

I set up DDNS - after much trial and error with dyndns it now works fine.
I tried to set up NTP time function - does not work. Then I set time manually. Of course on reboot it looses the time since there is no internal time function. So I need NTP.

In the course of troubleshooting I turned off DDNS and behold the NTP time function now works. I turn DDNS back on and NTP does not work.

I see no logical connection between these two functions, yet the seem to interact (or not) somehow.

When the NTP is not working, on reboot the time displayed in the router is the last time that I MANUALLY set the time, even though that is grayed out since I have (supposedly) activated NTP.

If I do NOTHING to NTP and uncheck DDNS, after reboot the time is correct.

I tried many different NTP servers all with the same result.

Looking back on-line, I see the NTP function has been a continual problem with some folks (maybe those using DDNS?) in earlier firmware. Come on DLINK don't you think it's time to get this fixed?

Any comments or solutions would be welcome.

are you setting a NTP Server address? How about using time.nist.gov as the server?

Well yes, I have set a server. Many of them. Including the one you listed. But as soon as I turn DDNS back on NTP does not work and the time defaults to the previously manually set value (even though NTP is still turned on).

Sounds like the router is getting the time from the DDNS servers maybe. Are there any NTP time settings on there system that you can set up?

I'm experiencing the exact same issue with my 655 (Rev B, 2.00NA). As soon as I enable the Dynamic DNS service the time doesn't get updated correctly when the router is rebooted. It tried both DynDns.com and DlinkDDNS.com services but it doesn't make a difference. I also tried numerous NTP servers but again it didn't help. I also don't see any time related settings on both dynamic DNS service web pages.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I actually need both services.

I'm with everyone else on the ntp problem.

I have setup ddns to use dyndns with no issues.

I've defined ntp with the default time servers and also various time server pools at ntp.org.  Doesn't seem to make a difference.

What I find is the router looses ntp when it boots, but if you go in remotely and reconfigure it after it boots it seems to apply and stick.  But it's still stupid that you need to do this.  After all if you have a brown-out while you are not home and you rely on the schedule functions within the router to enable/disable access (which I do for the kiddies) it defeats the purpose of relying on ntp.

I'm trying the new firmware released in Feb 2011 to see if it helps, but its not documented in the readme that it addresses this problem.
