Trouble formatting 2tb Samsung F4
« on: December 30, 2010, 03:27:10 AM »

Hi Guys
Just bought a Samsung 2TB F4 drive to replace 1TB drive. Not formatted a drive for long time. Firmware on 323 was upgraded several months ago to 1.08 with no apparent issues running the 1TB drives.
Utility software recognises new 2TB drive and begins format. Crashes at about 5% with "error code 112"
Have followed reset a few time but same problem. Any suggestions?  Does the drive have to be formatted through the utility software or can it be formatted through windows?
I am not configuring RAID because I want 2 drives independent, for maximum storage.

Any help would be appreciated - Am a novice, so in laymans terms please

Thanks in advance

The DNS-323 needs to format the drives.

My suggestion would be to hook up the drive to a computer and run manufacturers diagnostics on it to verify it is working properly.

I believe the F4 uses "Advanced Format Technology" not compatible with the 323. I'm not sure if there is a jumper you need to set on the drive to get round it, F4 owners should be able to help there.

Thanks for the reply.
Found solution to the problem. It was actually answered on the forum.
There appears to be a problem trying to format a new drive, whilst a drive is in the other bay. Problem is cured by removing second drive and just formatting new 2tb drive on its own.
Went trouble free after that.

Hi Dracup.

I was thinking of getting the '2TB Samsung HD204UI/Z4'. Is this the same hard drive that you are talking about? What transfer speeds do you get when transferring from your PC to the 323? I already have the WD 2TB EARS and its so slow I do not want to waste my money again.

Thanks

Roller.

The current firmware doesn't properly support advanced format drives. You'll find that the drives will format and you'll have the expected performance out of them. After a while, I'd expect to see a major R/W performance hit because the partitions aren't properly aligned. The more data you add and delete will eventually degrade speeds to useless levels. There is a thread on how to manually format in a non-RAID configuration. You can also find utilities that will align partitions post format.
