Cable internet is slow via wired/wireless DIR-655
« on: January 04, 2011, 05:55:21 PM »

 ???

I'm going bald and don't want to dedicate my remaining hairs to the DIR-655.  Please help!!

I have 12Mbps internet coming strong out of the cable modem ethernet port directly to the computer.  Through the DIR-655 I am getting 0.50-2.50 on both wired and wireless connections.  I have a Sony Vaio laptop, a Mac Pro, and a ipod touch 4G.  All are wireless, although I am currently hardwired into the router to try and fix this issue.  It has been going on for months now.  I have made the following attempts at fixing the problem:

1) powering down, disconnecting, reconnecting, and powering up both the wireless router and the cable modem.

2) resetting the router to the factory default

3) updating the firmware

4) calling tech support on two differect occasions with two different techs.  Only common sense changes (what is listed in 1-3) were made during the tech support calls.  They want me to send it in to have it looked at, but I believe there's a setting that could be out of wack.

Please help!!  I really don't know what to do and I do not want to pay for anything.  I spent $90 on this thing not two years ago.

Try a different cable by chance between the modem and router?

I would make the following changes after doing a factory reset once more:

Is your primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these addresses on the Status/Device INfo/Wan section. I helped set up my cousins 655 today and noticed these values were not automatically added to the Internet/manual section. We had to add them. Change your wireless mode from mixed to G mode only for wireless.
Set Firewall settings for TCP and UCP for Endpoint Independent.
Turn off protected WiFi.
Disable Short GI under Advanced Wireless.

Any of this doesn't work, I would recommend getting an RMA from DLink

I made these changes and they did not improve the poor signal transfer of my router.  However, I did change two things and for whatever reason, I got the router back up to the speed I am getting directly out of the modem, which is 11.50Mbps:

1) Under Tools>Time, I clicked on "Copy Your Computer's Time Settings"

2) Under Status>WAN>Connection Up Time, I clicked on "Release", allowed it to release, and then on "Renew", which then reset the router or something to that effect.

That worked for about a couple of days.  Then this f-ing thing started dipping down to 2.5 Mbps and all the way down to 0.80 Mbps on a regular basis.  I didn't want to deal with it until now, and so once I again I would really like some help here.  This is while I'm wired directly into the computer too, no wireless, although wireless will work at those slower speeds.

Why does this router work only at these slower speeds that seem to fluctuate?  Why aren't these things like the flip of a switch, they're either working or they don't.  There is way too much technical mumbo-jumbo in the router settings home page.

I would really appreciate any other suggestions people might have before this thing becomes a pile of broken plastic.

Has this been resolved.    I'm having the same trouble, ever since Cablevision/ Optimum bought my former provider Bresnan.   Now, going through the router, drops bandwidth by 1/3.  I cannot figure it out.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2 and Cipher type to AES only if your device support this.
