Need help with config
« on: January 05, 2011, 08:11:35 AM »

Hi all,

I have been reading through a lot of different posts regarding the Dir825 wireless router. I have learned a ton from all of your posts and have become really interested in setting my network up properly. I have had this router for a long time and never really got around to setting up my network the way it should be. I moved about 2 years ago and had Comcast cable service, which was a complete nightmare for me. The modem constantly lost connection and I was without internet.

After months and months of battling with Comcast I switched to Fios. When Fios was installed I was left with a black (need to find out the model I believe the 424) modem/wireless router combo. I briefly set it up with wireless and just rolled with it. Eventually I had a problem with my wife's Iphone suddenly not being able to get internet on the 424 router. Couldn't for the life of me figure out what was going on so I pulled out the Dlink dir825 I had and basically plugged it right into the 424. Both routers are pretty much running with the auto settings. All bands are broadcasting (I realize this is not the optimal setup but it worked). I was able to get her phone connected to the Dlink and hit the net. I basically forgot about it all. I recently have gotten into CoD blackops (only game I play) I have been having some connection interruption issues and decided to finally sit down and configure my network properly. I also plan on setting up a home server soon that I want to be able to remote login to.

The Dir825 is hardware A and was at firware 1.00. I updated last night to the most current version. 1.13NA. The update installed fine and at least for the brief time I was on after the installation...everything seemed much zippier. Hopefully, I didn't screw anything up. After reading through the posts I have discovered that these Firmware updates do more bad than good it seems.

Anyway, here is my issue. I will be first and foremost be disabling the onboard wireless on the 424 router. I don't really use it anyway. I don't really use the 5ghz band on the router either as I have never been able to really stream anything perfectly anyway. Maybe I should give the 5g band another shot with my media center and ipad. Anyway, my main concern is setting up the 2.4 band for my computers, mobile devices, and my ps3. I want to have assigned IPs so that they do not change anymore (I discovered the reserve feature in the router software last night so I imagine that is what that is for). Ideally, I would want to have the IP of the ps3 be in DMZ mode so that I can have no possible issue with ports/connectivity. I would also want the ps3 to get priority for bandwith when there are multiple connections on my router. My daughter likes to watch Youtube vids on her itouch. I noticed whenever there is streaming video the connection starts to crawl. I rather her video crawl than my Black-Ops match. What is the best way to do all of this?

I read a post about disabling the wireless on a 424 and also reducing the IP ranges from 2-100. Then disabling DHCP on the 825 and setting it's Ip to something outside the 424's ip range ( like .120) and then connecting ethernet on port 1 of both the routers. I plan on tackling that task tonight. After this I imagine I would then connect every device one by one to the 825 and reserve IP addresses. Then I can get into the setting for each Ip address.

Thanks for any help.

Okay, so I made those changes I said I was going to make and I guess all went well as far as I can see all connections refreshed and I didn't break the net;however, I can no longer reserve IPs through my dlink so is all the routing stuff now done on the verizon 424 side of things?

I did find the screen on the 424 where the static leases are assigned. I'm assuming this is where I want to d my routing configuration now that the 825 is basically set up as the bridge. Moving forward...

One thing I have noticed is that screen sharing from my imac to my mac mini (used as a media center for the tv) is dreadfully slow. It used to move at a decent speed where I could work on the media center when need be. Now it's very slow and even comes to a full stop at times...not liking that.

Latency on the mini is actually not due to the network. I noticed there were issues going on with it which is what sparked this whole thing. I noticed the wireless card is always looking for a network even though it's connected to mine. I'm not sure if it's losing a signal to my router so quickly that the bars never actually register the disconnect but it's definitely losing connection and then quickly searches for a network and before you know what's happening it's back on the wireless router. Either it's interference or my card is crapping out are my only guesses.

On the network side of things everything seemed to be running okay as of last night. Tonight could definitely bring a whole new nightmare for me but I think it was running strong from what I could tell. I had a question regarding my setup. Right now it's feels like I have my Dlink in the bridge mode being used simply to accept requests from wireless clients. This is fine, as that was my intentions; however, I would have preferred to use the routing features of the Dlink rather than the routing on the 424. Why can't I use the 424 as the bridge and the Dlink as the router? Reason I ask is because I'm wondering why I should even keep the Dlink in the equation to begin with.

A second question I have is concering the IP address given to the Dlink router. My range of IPs given out by the 424 is between .2-.100 but my router was given a static IP address outside that range (.120). What is the reason for that? Why did I give the Dlink an IP outside the alloted IP range?
