Author Topic: Cable modem + 655+ 4port leviton gateway+5port switch - how to config??  (Read 5050 times)

Does anyone know what order to hook these up in and how to configure them so that everyone is on the same subnet for sharing and everyone can get online?

The cable modem doesn't have any settings to modify.

My gut tells me to put the Dlink immediately downstream from the modem, but ... what comes next?  the switch?  the 4 port gateway?

you have it right. I presume this Leviton gateway is for house controlling items? I suppose you could put it right on the 655 router LAN port too. Wont hurt it. If the Leviton gateway needs special ports or connections to the internet, I would check with the MFR and see if you need to use any port forwarding or put the IP address for this unit out on the 655 DMZ.
Let us know how it goes.

The 4 port leviton gateway is basically a switch that I bought to spread out the internet connection to more hardwired locations in the house. I've got 9 ethernet jacks throughout the house that I wanted to hook up for home networking, so instead of galavanting around town and finding a switch that was sufficient, I bought two separate ones from lowes or homedepot.  One is just a 5-port switch, and the other is an "internet gateway"

Since then, I got the dir-655.

All of the products are in the same closet, so I can hook them up in any configuration.  I've had no problem getting the various hardwired locations online, but I need all the devices to show up on the same home network for printer and file sharing.

It's basically going to be a hierarchical (or tree) setup, but how do I make sure that one branch can see and talk to the other branch(es)?

I'm afraid if I don't have the dynamic ip stuff and subnet mask right, it might not work.  I just don't really know how to set it up correctly :(

Well If the Levtion gate is just a switch and no need for configuration, then just adding it and the 5 port switch to the 655 is easy. Just connect. I would leave off the Levtion first and connect the 5 port first. Connect up all your devices and get them going. Should you need other ports, then add the Leviton.

Can you tell me if the printer you have has a LAN wired connection? Thats preferred as then you can connect it to any port you wish and any PC that you install it and tell windows to use the IP address for that printer should connect and print to it just fine.

I would set up all of your devices on a static IP address on the 655 router so that you know what device is what and what IP address is has. Ease of management and troubleshooting and feature use as well. Any game consoles or internet streaming devices, do the same way and use the QoS feature of the router to help ensure good gaming network connectivity.

I would also change the WiFi mode to Single mode G or Mixed G and N. Not many devices use A and B anymore. There no need to be broadcasting modes that aren't being used more commonly.

Thanks Furry-
I'll give it a shot.

The printer can be wifi or hardwired.  I've only used it wifi since i got my 655, but that's because I haven't attempted to hook all the cables up in the closet yet.

I'm going to disable the WAN features of the leviton gateway and hope that it works just fine as a switch only.

Let you know how it works out
