I recommend trying G mode only on the WiFi before doing any FW updates.
Sorry, but I have to ask. How is this a solution? I assume people buy a wireless N router because they want the better signal and higher speed that comes with it. How is limiting a N router to G speeds, a fix?
Second, what's wrong with FW updates? Firmware updates hardly ever make things worse and if they do, there's also the option to revert back to the previous version, especially on DIR-615. Not to mention that these updates could contain security fixes, like for example the 4.13 I recommended.
Telling people to hold off on updates for operating system, computer software, router firmware and so forth is the primary reason why there are so many remote attack vectors available for so many systems/devices. Just to exemplify, there already was a worm that compromised vulnerable home routers and built a botnet from them.
That being said, I do agree that switching to different channels might improve things, but usually wireless overcrowding does not lead to disconnects, rather poor performance (signal, transfer rate).
The more likely culprit here is self-denial-of-service. Resource exhaustion because of poor resource management in the software. I've seen lots of people with similar problems report them all gone after switching to DD-WRT, which by default uses settings similar to D-Link's firmware. It just handles things better.
I'm sorry to say this, but I got tired of trying to find excuses for D-Link's firmware a long time ago. Way too many similar reports to be just a coincidence. It's simply crap.
