Traffic handling
« on: July 23, 2008, 11:10:21 AM »

I've ran into this every time I transfer large files: I have ONE device wired to my router a gig enabled Lacie NAS. One laptop and one desktop connecting via N (130mbs) and G (54mbs) respectively. When I transfer a large file or files to the NAS it chokes everything up. Last night the router dropped all connections when I first started to transfer files, when it came back up the transfer was ok but my wife could hardly browse the net from her computer (on the G connection). I placed an ordered today for a draft n wireless card to see if that helps, this will also allow me to run JUST in N mode. I will update the firmware tonight but it doesn't appear that it addresses any related issues.

Hi TekWarren,

First it is mbps, not mbs.

Second, since why are you still connecting at 130 mbps instead of 300 Mbps? Are you using Matching Adapters for the Router?

Thanks for correcting, but I did know what I was saying...being in IT over 10yrs P (per second) is just assumed  :P No neither adapter is matched to the router. My laptop runs an intel 4965abgn which of course is not capable of 300mbps  ;) with this router. 130mbps is the best this chipset will do with 655 router.

Anyway your question is not really relevant to the issue of transferring data from one computer to a NAS and having another computer (as well as the one doing the data transfer) experience sluggishness and time outs while web browsing. At this point I'll just hope that getting all computers running draft N wifi cards will help. I will have to look into replacing the 4965 in the laptop also perhaps with an Atheros chipset.

This is still an issue for me. I started transferring a large backup file that is around 13GB from my wireless laptop to my wired Lacie NAS and my wife just moments later is telling me her latency in world of warcraft just shot up. Instant messenger also disconnects on my laptop and browsing web pages come to a crawl or simply time out.

Just for info:
Laptop is connecting at 120mbps using an intel 4965 abgn mini pcie card
The desktop PC is using an Edimax brand N card (ralink chipset) and connects between 270 and 300...mostly 270
The Lacie NAS has a 10/100/1000 port on it and is verified to be connecting to the router with a gig link

The router has some things turned of like WISH. It is currently in N only mode with 20/40 auto. Also using wpa2 only with AES.

Any thoughts out there?

It may not be the internet pipe alone. I am not sure playing world or warcraft and transferring a 13GB file over the switch is a good idea. Transfer 13GB when you are sleeping.

Either way have you set up you QOS rules yet to help your wife latency and your internet browsing and chatting?

If 13 GB needs to fly across the network regularly then segment the traffic from your internet connection.

Did you not read the notice on most forums?

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=616.0

Note: Intel adapters are not the same as D-Links' N line. Intel Centrino adapters do not support the broader 40 Channel Width option. This (by design) limits their connection speed to 130.

Intel Wireless Wifi Link 4965AGN has the on-going connection problem because its design is limited to the narrow 20 Channel Width.  This limits it to 130 Mbps max.  I have been dealing with this for a few months already.  Not sure if the DIR-855 router would correct this, since it is not shipping (yet???)

Did you not read my post clearly?? The issue is not the adapter nor did I ever mention it was...I even stated MYSELF that I know the 130mbps limitation!!! ::) The issue is when transferring data...be it a a small file or a few gig brings the internet to a crawl. It doesn't matter if my wife is on WoW or simply browsing websites traffic to and from outside the network seems to bottleneck when transferring files locally between devices.

Go cut and paste your answers elsewhere buddy...good day!  :D

Its not that regular that I move large files but as I mentioned above its pretty much anytime I move any data. Its less noticeable with smaller files only because they move much more quickly. I have QOS disabled as it seems you can't enable it without first enabling traffic shaping which I do not need. My bandwidth is not restricted (former employee of local ISP) and I will never hit the max bandwidth with as little  uploading as I do. -It seems like you used to be able to have QOS enabled without shaping but maybe I'm remembering wrong. I am playing with WISH settings now since the PC's are all wireless as I mentioned and the only wired device currently is the NAS.
