Unstable internet connection
« on: January 13, 2011, 02:47:50 PM »

Hello all!  Due to a power surge, I replaced my D-Link Wireless G with the DIR-615 a few months ago. I never had an issue with the old router;  but, I am having a problem with this one.

My set up is as follows: one wired XP PC (which was used to set up the new router), one wired Vista PC, and 2 wireless Vista laptops.

My issue is with the wired Vista PC.  I can't get it to work smoothly with the router. My internet connection is intermittent and usually hangs.  I always have two networks: "Network" and "Unidentified Network." I can lose the unidentified network, but it always reappears after reboot.  Also, my internet connection is frequently toggling between "Local only" and "Local and internet."

My Vista PC works fine when connected directly to the modem (only one network), and it worked fine with my old D-Link DI-624 wireless G (only one network).  I can't go back to the old one as it was damaged in a power surge.

My conclusion is that there is definitely something about the new router that is causing this.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Iggy.

Make sure the NIC drivers are up to date for the Vista PC.

Try a different NIC in the Vista PC to test.

Assign a static IP for the Vista PC on the router.

Make sure the ISP DNS is being acquired by the router and serviced to the network. Check the Status/Device Info/Wan section for ISP addressing. You should see Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses.

Hmm, I wonder what else may have been damaged. How did the surge come in? Through the power line? Cable line?

As for the issue, so your problem is Wired Vista is losing the default gateway, but the XP isn't? When you lose the connection on the Vista, can you still get online with the XP? If so, I would agree with Furry and say its a Vista issue. The first thing I would try is disabling IPv6 on the Vista.

Start Menu > Start Search > ncpa.cpl > Right click Local Area connection and click on properties > Uncheck IPv6.

See how that does. Static IPs could help, DHCP reservesations can help. Also try disabling your Antivirus. When Vista detected the new connection, it would have asked you to label it (Home, work, trusted, etc) and that change may of changed how your AV monitors it. You can also change what kind of network its listed as in the Network and Sharing center.
