DNS newbie - Need some help
« on: January 14, 2011, 12:11:28 PM »

First of all, I apologize for my stupidity. I have been wanting to get a NAS for a few months, because we just switched computers at home, and I would like to keep all important stuff (Music, photos, etc) in one spot so that we don't have to transfer from computer to computer...

I am not IT-savvy, especially compared to many of you on the board. I am looking for the BASICS of file transferring to the DNS--

I have the DNS set up on the network with two Seagate 1.5 TB hard drives in Raid 1. We are moving from a PC to a Mac, and I have successfully mapped the DNS to both computers. However, I just don't know how to do the basic stuff. I assumed I could use it like another hard driver, where I could create folders, and move files as needed. But everytime I have tried that, I am told I don't have permission.

I have run through the administrative stuff, created a new user in addition to the "admin", and updated the firmware.  I feel like I have connected to the NAS and plugged in username/passwords. I have made sure my username has read/write access... But nothing works.

Bottom line is I just need some BASIC how-to's. I have run through the on-line manual, and the FAQ's, but nothing has gotten me to a point where I can move files over. Does anyone have any basic tasks instructions that they can point me to?

Again, sorry for the beginner question. I appreciate any help. I haven't called DLink support yet. Just wanted to see if any of you could help me out first. Thanks a ton!

Hello rocket348,

you have to login into the configuration section.
Then you select "Advanced" in the top menue and on the left "Network access".

In this form mark the dot-box "SMB". By default it should be marked already and there should be no other option.

Now you have to choose:
  • All users in the network shall have access to the share: Check "All accounts" and proceed to next step.
  • One user shall have access: Check "User" and select the previously generated user from the "Please select user ..." list.
  • A user group shall have access: Check "Group" and select the group from the "Please select Group ..." list.

After this, you click on the "Browse" button and navigate to the first folder (or HD root directory) which you want to share. This will happen in a popup window which closes automatically when you click "OK".
You have now a path in the field left of the "Browse" button.

Below that field you have a DropDown menu "Permissions". Set it to "Read / Write", if the user(s) should be able to write into this folder..

Leave the other DropDown menues as they are.
OPTIONALLY you can provide a comment for this particular share (e.g. "Music of name") because the share itself will just be named by the shared folder.

When you have done all this click on the button "Save settings".

This will make the selected folder available in the network.

All users in the network will see the share but if a user or group is chosen for this share, they have to enter their specific user name and password to have access. Maybe it is neccessary to tell Windows to ask for username / password, but I don't know how to set Windows to this behaviour.

If you want to share more than one folder repeat all steps, beginning with user selection.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a ton for the help, HSishi! I know it's a pain to help us beginners, so I really appreciate the quick walk thru!
