Hi,

My D-link modem dsl 302G is about 8 years old now and I think it may be the weak link in my network. If I buy a new modem that is also a router can I still put my DIR-655 off it.  This router has been good to me with good range and I am worried that the new modem/router may not have a similar wireless range.

If the DIR-655 is connected off the new modem router, will it;

1. help the network?
2. hinder the network?
3. be just a dumb thought and move on?

If you had cable ISP, then I would vote for a Motorola SB6120....but since you use DSL....I guess start with what your telco supports.....

Who is your ISP provider?

I also recommend buying a modem with out a built in router if possible, if you have to get one with a built in router, make sure you and bridge it. Connecting this to your 655 introduces connection problems until the modem is bridge to the 655 router.

Optusnet in Australia is my ISP provider - I rang them last week and found out my modem is adsl 1 even though I have been paying top dollar for their service.  Optusnet had supplied the dsl 302g modem - it's time to give it the flick.

Wonder if the D-Link DSL-2540B (has buit in router) DSL-2320B ADSL2/2+ would work for you better there?

Yes that is the site - that was an interesting link - I have 1 @ DLINK DSL-10MF filter and 1 @ DSE ADSL2_ filter/splitter (DSL008E1) and they are not on the list they recommend.  I am fairly sure they supplied the filters.  I think I will be giving them another call today.

The DSL-2320B ADSL2/2+ is not available in Australia yet.

Darn. well I guess you'll have to pick a good modem then. Try to find a good one with out the router built in. Let us know what turns up.

Can't I just nullify the router component of the new one and still use the Dir-655 - are you suggesting I'm going to go through pain if I don't really know what I am doing?  I am only just starting to become familiar with networking - the high level stuff is out of my reach.

Hi Wazza McG,

Since you already have a D-Link DIR-655 Router, if you need to replace the Modem, why would you opt for a Modem with a Built-in Router? You need to disable the Built-in Router on the Combination Modem / Router anyway.

Mostly because the modem I was looking at can also be set as an Access Point - that would help out with  the 300Mbps Access Point I already own - I can set that as a repeater, which will help me reach the kids bedrooms - I have some double brick walls to contend with.
