Help with Playstation 3 connection.
« on: September 07, 2008, 03:05:38 AM »

Alright, I just got this router to rid the problems I had with my previous Linksys unit, which so far it has done much better. So I am quite happy, although I have been looking around and have noticed weird things. I am currently on firmware 1.11 (as 1.20 and 1.10 do not work with my cable provider for some reason), I am connected to the PS3 through a wired LAN connection.

When I look up the PS3 reserved address in the router page it gives the MAC address as all zeros, also the DNS the PS3 grabbed (first and secondary) are the default router address, not the DNS listed in the router page.

UPnP is enabled on the PS3 and shows it as available on the DIR 655, so I get NAT TYPE 2. Which is good, but my question is, are these things wrong? Should i switch them? Will they lead to some connection issues?

I really would appreciate any help in this matter. Thank you.

No body? Its driving me crazy, I have very simply turned UPnP on in my PS3, and have touched NO settings on the D-Link. I have a wired connection. It drops the connection like once a day, my computers are not effected and this has never happened before. What can I do to solve this problem? Should I try something?

Don't have a PS3 so I can't help on all the things, but:

DNS address of the router is normal if you have the DNS Relay box checked in the Network Settings Setup.

UPNP (Universal Plug aNd Play) is supposed to make network connections easier to do between different type of equipment.

What is the exact page and location of where you see all the Zero's for the Mac address:
1. The Device Info page on the Status Tab
2. The DHCP Reservation box on the Network Settings Page on the Setup Tab.
3. The Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients box on the same page as #2.

I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help, but unless I'm mistaken, you should be getting NAT type 1 if the PS3 is wired.  NAT 2 is for a wireless connection with an open NAT, and NAT type 3 is restricted.  The status indicator on my router shows my PS3's IP address as all zeros (it's wireless), but everything works fine with no dropouts.  My PS3 is one of the original 60GB models, and no matter what configuration I use, I run into trouble when trying to use UPnP.  I have to disable it with every router I've used.

I see it here: 2. The DHCP Reservation box on the Network Settings Page on the Setup Tab.

What I did was go back and redo the PS3 listing. I assigned the IP to the PS3 and left it, the router picked it up again and gave it a MAC address that showed up this time. I reserved it.

And NAT TYPE 2 is for wired as well, just through a router, it means it was done properly. Thats what I was told anyway. I haven't heard of any problems with UPnP and the 60gig before (which is what I have to), did you open ports or just leave it disabled?

We will see now how it does.

The Router doen't issue a MAC address, it gets it from the device that is connected too.
The MAC address should match the one that should be printed somewhere on the machine near where the network connection is.

Since everything is connected and you see a real MAC address then you should be good to go.

You're probably right about the NAT type 2 issue.  I was going off memory, which is a bad thing.

My issue with UPnP was that I couldn't connect to anything at all if it was enabled.  I put the PS3 in the DMZ, forwarded ports (on my previous router,  while not in the DMZ), and had to disable UPnP to get the connection going.  There were times when it would connect, but it would drop out.  I should note that I use the PS3 strictly for viewing Blu-rays and streaming movies from my computer.  Right now, I don't have it in the DMZ (the 360 is), no ports forwarded, UPnP off, and it's working just fine.  Watched a two hour movie last night and the signal never dropped.

What about NAT Endpoint Filtering? I heard this might be a way to help something like online gaming or other P2P issues?

Because the error I keep getting on my PS3 is supposedly a random connection drop from something that is either too secure or just something they don't fully understand yet. As I heard it was new.... the error I mean.

What about NAT Endpoint Filtering?
Sorry, you just went over my head with that one.  The only problems I've learned to solve are the limited ones I've experienced so far.  I know the PS3 gives you an error code when something happens like that, and I found a lot of information by searching for that on the PS3 forums.  You may want to try there and see if anyone can help.  (link below)
