Software to Sync DNS-323 with Remote Hard Drive, Possible?
« on: September 09, 2008, 02:08:52 PM »

Any ideas on the best software solution that would sync my DNS-323 in the office with specific directories on my Home Media Center PC.  So I would have a backup of everything in two locations?

A quick search revealed a programmed called Allway Sync at http://allwaysync.com/ You just need it to run on your Media Center PC and use the DNS-323 to store the replicated data.

I've never used this program nor have a heard of it. But I have seen other such programs of this nature on file servers in different locations (used for local caching).

BTW, it only took me 2 seconds to search. It's all about the "google fu".  8) Now go forth and search young padawan!  ;D

Thanks for the info.  Yes, I am aware of Google, but my question was related to the "best"; or in other words solutions people have successfully used.  Just looking for any opinions out there to help my search.  Thanks again.

I've used SyncBackSE for backing up and/or synchronizing files for years. There is also a free version, SyncBack, with fewer features that may suit you. I'm now using it on my newly purchased DNS-321 and so far it works fine. It has a tremendous number of features including:
  1. Compress and encrypt backed up files
  2. Unattended scheduling
  3. Variables for setting path, etc

Have you looked at the free MS SyncToy app? It would do what you're looking for.

I use allway sync and have had zero problems with it. I have only used the free version.
I like the fact that they have formatted the software to fit all types of people.

1. allway sync (standard)
2. allway sync and go (can install on a flash drive)
3. allway sync and go .paf (Portable Apps format)
4. allway sync U3 (U3 platform)

so you can get the right installation to suite your needs.

you can also look at another sync software that has a good easy setup
smartsync

the free version of allway sync is a great product.

I second Microsoft's SyncToy 2.0. I've been using it for a while.

I've been using a product called Beyond Compare (http://www.scootersoftware.com/); you have to purchase it after the 30-day trial but it's worth absolutely every penny.
