Speed Issue
« on: September 10, 2008, 12:54:29 PM »

Dir-655 and DWA-556 paired.  This is the only one currently connected to wifi.

They are about 8 feet from eachother direct line of sight.

I have all settings as they should be for 300Mb/s and windows config does say its connected at 300Mb/s but I have two issues.

1.  Even though I have 20/40 auto on... dir-655 still says its only 20.
2. Actual rate given by Dir-655 has NOT gone above 130.

Are you running an N-only environment?
Do you have any neighbors that may be running wireless too?

I am running n/g... i do have neighbours... but signal strength is 100%.

I'd prefer having the option of 40 as a width instead of auto.  Wonder why they didn't put this in.

The only way to get the best speeds is an N only environment.
The 20/40 thing has to do with the WIFI standards and being "Neighbor Friendly"

I am running the 1.20 firmware on my 655 with N only and the option of 40 only is there.

According to their 300Mbs requirements that is not true (only suggested)... i can leave it in n/g mode and it should get me that speed - currently i do not have any g clients connected (my wii and a crappy dell notebook- they will only be used sporadically)

1) The router and adapter are both D-Link 802.11N products and are using the latest firmeware/drivers. Ensure that the 802.11 Mode of the router has a 802.11N mode selected. Also if you have issues with mixed mode, try locking the 802.11Mode to either 802.11N Only or 802.11G/N.

I just checked and i can get 40 if i do straight n which is not a possiblity since i do have g clients (just not connected now)... however if all i have is a N client connected it should go to 40 immediately should it not?

That's why I asked about other wireless in the area.  I believe if the 655 picks up a signal from another router in the area it will back down to the 20.

If thats the case that screws anyone who lives inside the city... i dont care if i steal some spectrum honestly.

and for that matter i see about 12+ networks as i live in a town house complex... 1 guy I can see has 270Mb/s 40 Mhz ... but its a linksys... perhaps when i finally migrate i should consider them... since clearly he isn't having my issue (hes running b/g/n)

I've got bigger problems... I have to deal with a 'known' issue with dwa-556... computer wont shut down... i may be returning it if the trouble shooting doesnt work.

Well...if the router is picking up stray signals will lowering the power from high keep it less sensitive and enable a constant 40mghz?

Unfortunately, no.  It's not just the router picking up the signals, either.  Your clients also hear these and set the "incompatible" bit which forces 20 MHz operation.  This is not only good for those legacy networks, but it's better for your N network too.  Studies Cisco did on interference coexistance showed that intelligent holdoffs vs. forced interference improves throughput on both networks.
