DGL-4500 loses wireless connection about once a week
« on: January 20, 2011, 07:47:46 AM »

I'm a novice when it comes to networking, just to warn you.   :D

I have a DGL-4500 router connected to a Zhone DSL modem.  We have 2 iPhones, and our cordless phones are on 8.x GHz frequency.   There are nearby radios from neighbor's wireless.  We live in a house not apartment.

I'm not quite sure where the wireless is being dropped.  I'm running Windows 7 and the wireless icon will show the 5 bars but with a yellow question mark or triangle on top of it.

I've unplugged the modem and replugged it to the power source but that doesn't seem to help.  I usually have to unplug and replug the router.

The only wireless N devices we have are the two new XBOX 360's and my wife's laptop.  I have about 18 connected devices, all wireless.  They are not all connected at the same time, we average about 8 connected at any given time.

I don't know where to start troubleshooting because I don't know if it's a modem or router issue.  I think the modem is bridged....it configured itself automatically when I plugged in the router.  I literally had to do nothing but plug the modem to the router.  Also, I can't get a UI page for the modem but can for the router.

I was reading other posts and was thinking that I should try running in just "G" mode to test.  Should I do that?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

ETA:

I'm running 2.4 GHz, mixed mode wireless on all the time.
Transmission Rate: Best
Channel Width: auto 20/40 MHz
WPA: Personal
WPA Mode: Auto
Cypher type: TKIP and AES
Group Key Update Interval: 3600 seconds
DHCP Server: Enabled
DHCP Lease time: 1440 minutes

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

What hardware version is your 4500? A1 or A2?

Is your ISP modem a stand alone modem or does it have an built in router by chance?

What are the highest supported wireless mode devices? I.e. G and N? If you don't have any devices that use A or B modes, then theres no need to broadcast modes that you aren't using. I would change to Mixed G and N mode. Yes I would try single G mode only for a test and see if you notice any disconnection.

If there are other WiFi radios in the area, could be cause for interference. You might try changing the Channel to 11 first then work your way down and see if you notice any change.

Is your devices set on DHCP or static IP addressing? I recommend static IP addressing for the amount of devices you have. I have 15 on static.  ::)

Also make sure DNS relay is enabled.

Do you have the option for Advanced DNS services?

What Firmware version is currently loaded? 1.21NA

What hardware version is your 4500? A1 or A2? A2

Is your ISP modem a stand alone modem or does it have an built in router by chance? stand alone modem, no router

What are the highest supported wireless mode devices? I.e. G and N? If you don't have any devices that use A or B modes, then theres no need to broadcast modes that you aren't using. I would change to Mixed G and N mode. Yes I would try single G mode only for a test and see if you notice any disconnection. Highest supported are G&N, I don't think I have any that are A&B

If there are other WiFi radios in the area, could be cause for interference. You might try changing the Channel to 11 first then work your way down and see if you notice any change. Will do

Is your devices set on DHCP or static IP addressing? I recommend static IP addressing for the amount of devices you have. I have 15 on static.  ::) They are definitely Dynamic. Is there an easy way to set them to static?

Also make sure DNS relay is enabled.  I checked and it is.  It is enabled but grayed out so I can't de-select it.

Do you have the option for Advanced DNS services?  I thought I would be able to answer all questions but on this one, I don't know.  Is it a tab in the UI?  If so, I do have an "Advanced" tab.  :P

ETA: I did see that under "Status" tab and then "Device Info" Advanced DNS is enabled.

Thanks, FN!

Ok, We had reports on here and my experience as well that v1.21 had been known to cause wireless hangs and drops and even router hangs. I have an A1 router. Been told that others have had good experience with it and have left it on.

I would switch to Single G mode at 2.4Ghz Chl 11 for some testing and see if you notice any changes..Go back to Mixed G and N.

If you review the gaming and game fuel sticky for PS, that give some information on setting up static IPs for everything. Its recommended for ease of troubleshooting and you know who is who and if you set up any rules, they won't be broke if the IP changes if left on DHCP automatic. It's pretty east to set up Static IPs. Just turn everything off first. Start with your main PC that you'll be logging into with. Clear out the DHCP list by revoking everything in the list. Then add ur pc. Once thats done, turn on the next device and add it. Keep going till your out of devices. LOL

Need to find where and if you can turn off Advanced DNS services. I thought that was an option at some point however might not be anymore and just might be on my default. Let me see if I can find it.
Update: It's under Basic/Internet/Manual Its the 2nd section down.

Thanks Furry, I found the Advanced DNS and turned it off.  I also changed the channel to 11.

I'll set all the devices to static IP's now, and will run "G" band only.

Hey Furry,

I want to make sure that I did this correctly.

Under Basic>Network Settings>DCHP Reservation List I added and saved all devices which reserves the IP address.  Is this the same thing as a static address?  The assigned IP now says that it never expires.

Thanks!
