Serious DIR-655 rev B issues
« on: January 23, 2011, 06:49:40 PM »

First of all I want to say this is my first D-Link in a long time.  I hada lot of experience with D-link a number of years ago that lead me to beleive that only masocichists bought them.  but I couldn't resist the price for this unit.  under $100 (in realist they should have paid me to take it!)

The problems started early on.  and are getting worse.

1) through put on the LAN (wired) is horrible  best I can manage is 200kbps when transfering files between Gb NIC's on the LAN.  it takes an hour to copy a 700mb file between computers!!!  my old netgear 100mb router could do this in 5-10 minutes

2) I can't edit anything in the GUI.  every time I move off the the Status page I have to login again!! makes it impossible to get any configuration done!

3) now it's just got worse! I gave up on 2) above and used the CD to set it up.  after the CD routine I was able to login to this router ONCE!!!  I made a change to the wan connection in advance networking (set it to 100)

I'm starting to thnk that the B in rev b stands for BRICK!!

any ideas?  please help

Update,  I've been going through it methodically and discovered that the character _ seems to cause some of the insanity!!!   my SSID on all my previous routers had been name_LAN_1  on this one,  it causes the unit to go insane.

also figured out that the system does not like a password longer than 4 characters!!! what kind of security is that!  when I used Span1shGu1tar as my password I was unable to login to the system,  also password seems to be too long! as long as I stick to 4 char passwords (with no special characters) the router is stable,  unsecure but stable!  Guess D-link doesn't think the admin account needs a strong password!!

Hi was98strat,

What is your operating system and Service Pack Level if any?

Don't use Special Characters in the SSID Signal Name, even though it doesn't mention it.

You are setting the password in both boxes for Admin?

Go back to Auto.

the OS is windows 7,  and I have the same issues with all 4 of my PC's when accessing the webGUI

yes the password is set in both boxes of the admin.  If not then the password would not be set and still be blank.   What I've noticed is happening is I type the password and then click login. at that time,  the page ads 3 characters to the password and then gives me the login error.

I've resolved the issue now by resetting the unit yo defualt and setting a simple 4 letter password and changing very little on the interface.  managing it is just too frustrating.  unfortunately this Dlink device mirrors my professional (IT manger) experience with Dlink.  their products are just not QA'd enough to be ready for use at home,  and DEFINTITLY not ready for any type of business class use.  every one I've worked with has had some serious programming issue or security flaw!

I would either contact DLink and ask them about the 4 character password issue you found and see what they say, if not, is there an option for you to return the unit to Place of Purchase? I got my cousin this router and it did not exhibit this issue. You should be able to put in any size password and it should work well.

I have the DIR-655 RevB and don't have an issue with passwords longer than four characters. My password is much longer than this. Also throughput on my LAN is much, much better than what you are getting.
My only serious complaint with this router is it is completely useless with VOIP hardware. I really hope D-Link can get this issue figured out because I'm really regretting spending $80 on this router because of the VOIP issues.
Good luck, maybe they'll listen to your complaints more than they have mine.
