DIR-655 can no longer access Internet
« on: January 28, 2011, 08:12:44 AM »

My DIR-655 has been working flawlessly for several months since I bought it. It is connected to Road Runner High Speed Internet from Time Warner. This morning it will not access the Internet. It shows a wireless connection, and I can connect to it via direct wired connection, but no Internet. A direct connection to the Time Warner Cable Modem connects to the Internet just fine. Cycled power on all units, & Time Warner reset the modem. Nothing has fixed the Router.
Any ideas?

I experienced the exact same problem at the same time.  Using my DIR-655 on Time Warner Road Runner in the early morning (~ 2 am) January 28 and by 8 am it had stopped working.

I, too, have the same exact problem.  It is a problem with my router, as I can connect to the internet when modem is connected directly to the computer.  When I call Dlink, the recording says they have too many calls and I am then disconnected from Technical support.

Any info out there about this problem?

Thanks,

Woke up this morning to no internet. Time Warner/RoadRunner asked my brand of router: I said Dlink. They said that the weirdest thing was going on, they are flooded with calls from persons who have Dlink routers that aren't working this morning. Just a heads-up if you own a Dlink product. Mine is less than 30 days old, so I am going to attempt to return it today.

Check if you have Setup/Internet/Enable Advanced DNS Service checked.
if so then un-check it and get the DNS servers addresses from your gateway and enter them in the Primary/Secondary DNS Addresss.
If not then I have no answer.

Based on the information from TimeWarner/RoadRunner tech support, my understanding is that the problem is not just limited to this model DIR-655. In order to help and notify as many D-Link users as possible of a large-scale problem, where is the best place to post an alert on this forum?

Most forums are model specific, but this problem does not appear to be.

In rethinking this issue...I wonder if Time Warner is the culprit here.  My router has passwords, etc., and I didn't think anyone, including Dlink, could change anything. However, Time Warner can do many things with the modem, without our knowledge.

I'm really confused as to who is at fault here.

I got the same problem. This really blows. I'm just going to to return the router if the problem is not solved within the next hour.  It seems to be the easiest course of action at this time.

Is there a DNS Relay option? Check to make sure this option is enabled.

I would start from scratch. Do a factory reset. Power cycle the cable modem.
Make sure the Router is getting a WAN Public IP address in Status/Device Info/Wan Section.
Copy the Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses and enter them into the Setup/Internet/Manual settings. This section should also be using DHCP to acquire the WAN IP address from the ISP Modem.

I would disable Advanced DNS Services. Make sure DNS Relay is enabled if you have this option.
I would set up static IP addresses for all of your connected devices. Setup/Networking.
I would turn off Wireless for now just to see if you can get a good stable wired connection. Turn it back on after. I would use Single mode G only at 2.4Ghz to test. If you need N then go Mixed Mode N. Theres no need to broadcast A and B much anymore.

Turn other features off like WISH and Protected WiFi Setup. You can turn these back on if you need them.
Ensure uPnP is enabled.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for both TCP and UDP.

Test these settings using one PC at first then add as you go. Let us know how it goes.

I followed Bendan's advice and unchecked "Enable Advanced DNS Service" (it is under Setup -> Internet -> Manual Internet Connection Options, click Manual Internet Connection Setup) and it worked.  I have internet and wireless again through the DIR-655!  Had to save settings and reboot modem and router.

Thanks Bendan!

I am not sure what Enable Advanced DNS Service does?  Any problems running with it unchecked?  Anyone know?

Advanced DNS Service is a feature to check websites against a list of known Phishing sites and other things like check for typos.
It looks like dlink uses a yahoo site.
both the primary and secondary sites seem to be in the same physical location ... not a wise choice!

Google for Advanced DNS Service gives (among others): http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2111146

I decided to work without the feature for now.

So, for those of us a bit slow on the uptake, would you please step-by-step detail for us how to un-check:
"Enable Advanced DNS Service"?

This option is under the Setup/Internet/Manual section. Uncheck the check box.

Yes, can anyone tell me how to get to the Status/Device Info/Wan Section?  Can't access my router when it's not connected to the internet, and can't connect to the internet with the router???

HELP!
