Another internet connection issue
« on: January 28, 2011, 11:32:20 AM »

I've searched the forums a bit, but my issue doesn't seem to be precisely the same as what I've found on this forum.  My DAP-1522 is connecting just fine to my DIR-825 wirelessly (albeit only on the 2.4 ghz band), but the two wired music servers on it cannot see the Internet.  They DO see the rest of the network and all three of the DAP-1522 and the two music servers are pingable.  Further, I can use other wired and wireless devices on both the 2.4 and 5 ghz bands to control the two music servers using VNC and a browser interface.  Unfortunately, however, the two music servers can't access the internet.

My internet provider has me on a static IP address, but most devices on the network are on DHCP.  However, I have assigned static IP addresses to the router, a range extender, a printer, my NAS, the two music servers, and the DAP-1522.  Since I've assigned all of the static IP addresses in the devices themselves, I have not reserved any addresses on the DIR-825.  Also, after several failed attempts to get the DAP-1522 connected wirelessly using manual settings after I initially set it to its static IP address, I finally got it to connect wirelessly to the 2.4 ghz band using WPS.

Since everything behind my DSL modem is just humming and all devices are pingable, I have to think that I ought to be able to get out to the internet with the two music servers just by making a simple settings change or two.  All other devices on the network that need to see the internet do so, and with great connections, so I figure I must not be too far off.  Is there something in particular that you can recommend I check?  Thanks for any help you can offer, and just ask if there's additional information needed from me.

Are all other items plugged into the router able to see the Internet? Is it just your music servers that cannot see the Internet,
or can other devices plugged into the 1522 see the Internet?

Thank you for tackling this.  I am sorry that I did not see your response until now.

With one exception, all other devices plugged into either the router or the bridge do see the Internet.  The exception is my Buffalo NAS, ethernet-cabled to the router.  Like the music servers, it is very visible and usable within the network, on both bands, whether the particular device's connection is wired or wireless.  However, I cannot use bit-torrent or web access, which require ports 8080 and 9000, respectively.  I've tried disabling my software firewall, changing the firewall settings on the router, port forwarding, making the NAS a virtual server, reserving it a DHCP address instead of its manually-applied static address, and making port 9000 WAN pingable, without success.  My old 2wire router had no issues with making the NAS available to the internet (or, for that matter, internet radio on the music servers), so I wonder if there's something wrong with the router that's causing it to keep these ports closed for some reason.

Let me know if you need more information from me.  I appreciate any assistance you can offer.

If you plug the Nas directly into the modem does it have Internet access??

My modem, as it happens, does have four ports (since it's a 2wire DSL modem/router combination unit), but I don't know how I'd control or access the NAS if I plugged it into the modem rather than the router.  I don't mean to be a dunce, but how would I access the modem if I did that?  Just use the same static IP address that it now uses when connected to the router?

Plug the NAS into one of the 2wire ports and plug a computer into one of the 2wire ports. Now you should be able to access the Nas through the computer to check if it now has Internet access. Btw, were you using the 2wire in bridge mode when you connect the Dir-825 to it.

Thank you for responding.  Yes, I have the 2wire running in bridge mode.  I should have mentioned that.

Someone has suggested to me that I may have NAT enabled on both the modem and router.  Unfortunately, to get to the modem setup screens, I have to set a static IP address on my computer and get off my network, so I won't be able to check out both the modem and router setup screens at the same time.  When I am off the network, I'll check out the NAS' ability to see the Internet just using the modem.
