Sony Bravia iLink -<with>- DGL-4500
« on: October 19, 2008, 11:54:11 AM »

For a while now, I've noticed that using that DGL-4500 with the Sony Bravia iLink (on my Bravia television), that when I try to watch any of the internet channels available over the iLink, the video tends to take awhile to load and stops alot to buffer more video.

I find this very annoying.

Well, looking through the router logs for connections specific to the iLink, this is what I find where ever the video stops while playing.

Blocked outgoing ICMP packet (ICMP type 3) < This is where the iLink needs to communicate with the server.

Currently running firmware v1.12 with my Sony Bravia iLink in DMZ mode.

Firmware v1.13 appears to be total crap and I was glad to get it off my router.

Hey Dragon,

First and foremost, "Blocked outgoing ICMP packet (ICMP type 3)" is normal to appear in router logs. So an ICMP packet with a message type 3 (Destination Unreachable) lets you know that the machine you tried to reach may not be listening on the port used (if the port is not firewalled. If it is, then what happens depends on the config of your own firewall). So if you can, determine which port your ilink uses and you can setup port forwarding just to make sure that's not an issue. Or put an exception for that port in the firewall inside the router.

Secondly, Well, usually video over the internet does take a few seconds to buffer. This does cause the initial buffering distortion and the occasional buffering delay while in the middle of it. How to avoid this issue? You could setup QoS inside the DGL-4500 for your ilink product to receive the best possible bandwidth allocation. Just login to the router, click on advanced on the top, then choose either WISH or GAMEFUEL on the left hand side. Under the WISH option you could setup a priority and classify it as Video (VI) and that may give you better performance. You would just need to know the IP address that is given to your Bravia iLink.

Best of Luck,

Russell

This has been going on since I first got this router and this is the first time I've actually decided to complain about this issue with the iLink.

As for video over the internet or even or networks.......
---- With my last router, I did not have this problem with the iLink and the blocked outgoing ICMP packets.

Plus even with the DGL-4500 I do a lot of high speed video over my network (not counting the iLink) with no buffering problems.

With the DGL-4500 and the iLink, the video stopping is frequent enough that it makes the iLink just about unusable.

As for buffering, my connection is fast enough that there should be no buffering what so ever, so what I should have said is the iLink is attempting to connect and during this time period, the bar shows at the bottom of the TV screen showing this along with any attempt at buffering action.

 - BTW...
I'm not very good at explaining stuff as I'm much better at doing stuff or at when needed, showing what's what. But terrible at explaining what's going on.

As for the WISH option, that would be useless as I've got the wireless completely disabled cause I'm running a GigaBit network, with no wireless.
