SecureSport isn't advertising. If you don't like it you can disable it.

Procedure:

Advanced -> SecureSpot -> "uncheck" secure spot -> voila! disabled.

OR!

You can opt to download the non-securespot version. (Note: the link resides within the revision history table)

Gee Eddie,
It would be nice if it was plausible to run DD-WRT on these devices.  Unfortunately there is no alternately supported firmware for the DIR-655 so this is just another condecending and extremely lame idea coming from your keyboard.

My idea for these boxes:  Ebay calling...  Going, going, G-O-N-E.   Good riddence...

PEACE OUT!!

If these things really cause you to be upset (see the original text of the complainer) you might wanna get a life...getting upset by this and a discussion about the default position of an on/off switch. No wonder I sound condecending...

If you check the other posts that I have done in this forum you would have noticed that I have, up until this point, said nothing but praise for the product.

By the way, "Get a life." phrase is usually a cop out by someone that does not have one.  Wait.... did I just say what I was explaining about?

Anyway, if I did not have a life then I would not have a wife and kids which where in two different rooms complaining to me about the messages that were coming up.  Or was it the wife saying, "You bought another router?  How much did this one cost?"  I, also, would not have, cats, job, friends, (not necessarily in that order...  uhm... What makes a person have a life?  No principles?  Oh, I know, must be the hardware.

I will be nice.  As a request, "Please oh please do not market on my network."

The point is that if people don't draw the line, things will get much worse before it stops.  It won't just be de-link, it will be the other handful of companies that "compete" with them as well.  Why?  Because it's easy money and people like Eddie won't bother to complain.

Just think, context sensitive ads in your router's configuration page!

And yes, the "option" to disable ads for this "service" should be disabled by default.  Or better yet, the ads should not be included to begin with!  ::)

Eddie, just imagine if your mother bought this router and didn't know how to disable the ads that keep popping up... do you think the Indian "tech support" she'd call (or is it Malaysian now?) would really be much help?

You can sell your new service on dlink.com.  You can even include a small pamphlet advertising this "exciting new service" or whatever in the retail box.  Just don't include pop-up advertisements in my (already over-priced) new router.

Thanks.

You guys installed the firmware. YOU failed to read the features included with it.
Also if you had payed attention there is a version that DOESN'T have the besecure client.

No one is advertising on your "network" the router is simply making you aware of the feature. Once you disable it by declining the feature it will NEVER ASK YOU AGAIN. In fact to get the feature back if you change your mind you'll have to contact us of the phone and we have to request that bsecure re-register you.

I agree completely with Lycan.  8)
Deinstall it, get the Bsecure-less firmware and stop whining about it. I guess you're also suing the postman for dropping an advertisement brochure in your mailbox? If the ad had 'beavershot's ...yes, that would be very disturbing for your kids. But don't worry, they'll get over this exposure to the Dlink ad.

Lycan, this version of the firmware comes with the new routers.  No one needs to download it, it's already there.  Maybe de-link should spend more time fixing bugs and less time including "feautres" like ADVERTISEMENTS FOR A PAY SERVICE in their firmware.

Good luck with this new "feature" though, sounds like a great way to lose customers from spamming computers connected to your devices.

In the future it might be a good idea to try not to belittle your customers who keep you in business by buying your products for their home "networks".

You seem to have quite some enlightened opinion about yourself to consider yourself to be the mother of all clients. Overall your're only one of four on the forum that keep whining about missing features, too many features, features that can theoretically (but without POC) be abused, features that absolutely need to be turned off because YOU (or the other three) don't use them... etc etc. Sorry, but that's the only thing you seem to contribute. So commenting on Lycan's respons is not your prerogative. Just get a Linksys and play on their forum.

I guess every firm has clients they can do without (not even taking into account you like 'Audi'  ;D).

^^  Congratulations, you're an idiot.

I'm not sure what kind of pleasure you get out of helping some random company that you are only loosely affiliated with.  Are you paid for your services, Eddie?  If doing random, unpaid work for strangers makes you feel good about yourself then feel free to come over to my house and do my yard work this weekend.

The only point of forums like this is to get feedback from people who like to pledge "loyalties" ( ::)) to a company or their products.  People like you post (free) feedback here about products for a company, they respond and say they are working to fix whatever bug you found or complaint you had.  The end result that the company is looking for by setting up a forum like this is to use unpaid testers (yokels like you) for their products who will actually go out and purchase more of the company's products and maybe even recommend their product(s) to their own friends (building product loyalty).  Think about what you're really doing here.

I know damn well that DLink will probably remove my posts and ban me from these forums for criticizing one of their products or a business practice they use.  I did not register on this site to help DLink "debug" their products or to be part of some "product community".  My only intention here is to let this company know that I am unhappy with their choice of marketing tactics.  I'm sure if my comments ever made it to their corporate office (probably two doors down from Lycan) they might consider a better (less invasive) idea to make more money.

SecureSpot is now a standard feature on some of dlinks routers.  The intent, I believe, is to give you the choice to turn on/off at first boot with the new firmware.  This allows you as a parent to decide, do I need to filter my childrens access to the internet.

The router, by default is blocking all traffic, until that decision is made by the parent.

Is that really that bad of a thing?

Perhaps a good intention, terribly bad delivery.

D-Link could point to this feature as someone tries to reach the administration pages for the first time, but it should NEVER EVER EVER intercept someone's LAN or WAN session.

This is what got Belkin into dutch with its users several years ago, big time.

I was shocked when I read the stories about this.  I had no idea that D-Link was planning on marketing securespot in this terrible way.  My advice is to immediately shut it off pending redesign.

TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!  If you don't understand this, let me know.  I'll call you and explain it to you.

You do not NOT EVER inject yourself between the user and destination and hijack or redirect their page.

Had my DIR-655 done this out of the box, it would have gone right back into the box and back to the store with red marker all over it: BROKEN BY DESIGN - DO NOT RESELL.

From my read of the original article, the people getting this securespot version are the people that are updating from within the configuration pages.  They're not offered an alternative.

No one is advertising on your "network" the router is simply making you aware of the feature.
Bullcrap.

Once you disable it by declining the feature it will NEVER ASK YOU AGAIN.
This is very similar to what spammers say to convince you to Opt-Out instead of complaining to their upstream providers.

You're a real [exploitive deleted], "Wal_".  I guess I wouldn't have expected any less from you or the company you work for.

It's also kind of funny that the wireless signal on the DLink router I'm using suddenly dropped (after days of up-time) right after your response.  I got some kind of error that Windows said was due to "low signal strength".  The funny thing is that I have NEVER had problems getting a great signal in that room before and NEVER got that message in the past.  Don't you guys log the IP address of every poster and since I'm using a DLink router it wouldn't be a far stretch to say that if you wanted to do something lame and weak like mess with my router it wouldn't be that hard to do?  ::)

One less customer for you to worry about now.  I'll submit this post with my computer connected straight to my modem, thank you.

...

You seem to be responding to my last comment, "I'm sure if my comments ever made it to their corporate office (probably two doors down from Lycan) they might consider a better (less invasive) idea to make more money."  You and I both know that I am not the only person who feels the way I do about your ad tactics, whether I am alone or not among the measly 100 or so users that actually post on this forum.

It's great to know that this company doesn't care about the concerns of their customers.  Obviously you don't care about the people who buy the things you make or the concerns of these customers regarding your products.

Thanks for letting me know what you and this company are about.
