DIR-655: help with NAT definition
« on: November 05, 2008, 06:20:41 AM »

Hi,
I have a Dlink DIR-655 router connected to the internet and to 2 clients:
1. DVR with built-in network capability. Its internal IP address is, eg: 192.168.0.180
2. PC with WinXP Pro. It's IP address (got by DHCP from my ISP) is e.g.: 85.85.85.1
When I type in my PC the following address I get the built-in portal of the DVR (http://192.168.0.180). My question is: how can I access the DVR from any PC connected to the internet (not my PC)? - Does my PC should be turned on in order to get my DVR or it may be turned off as well?
Thanks in advance for your help!

why have the ISP IP on your PC? If you assign this IP to the router the PC will receive an internal IP as well as any other PC that wil be connected to the router. In return any PC will be able to connect to the PVR.

Hello Ranb,

Just to expand on what EddieZ was saying; Your PC, if connected correctly, should be getting an IP address from the router; which is generally 192.168.0.100. All of the computers connecting to the router should be getting a similar number. This is called a private IP address. The only device that will have the Public IP address is inside the router.

So given that your default IP address of your DVR is 192.168.0.180, you should be good to go. All of your computers will be able to login to it just fine.

I'm a little unclear if you were just questioning this or having a problem. If you're having the problem of not being able to access the DVR, I would first start with verifying that your cables are in the right spot ;).

Best of Luck,

Russ

Hi,
First of all, thanks for your replies. I'll do what you suggested.
My question is how to make/define the access from the outside Internet world to the DVR which is currently connected as an internal client in my private network. As far as I understand, the 192.160xxxxx is unknown to externals, so how do I make this access?
Thanks,
Ran
