Port Forwarding/Virtual Server UPnP not working on 655
« on: November 12, 2008, 02:12:54 PM »

Setup:
DIR-655 Hardware ver A3 with firmware version of 1.20
I've tried for the last 12 hours to get port forwarding to work on this router with no avail. I've rolled back to 1.11, I've rebooted and so on with no success.

I'm trying to get this thing to work with Windows Home Server so that I can access my files from the outside.  I had this working with an older WRT54G with DD-WRT on it and it worked well..... I'm about to go back to this router because it worked.

I've tried UnPnP with WHS setting the ports automatically - did not work
I tried Port Forwarding ports 80, 443 and 4125 - no luck
I tried Virtual server with same ports and both tcp and udp - no luck.
I've tried 1.11, 1.20 and 1.21 firmware versions but the same thing happens - I can't get from the outside in.

I've turned off the firewall on my dsl modem - still nothing.

What do I do to get this thing to work, or do I just trash it until a better update comes along and actually makes this thing work?

(Sorry about the rant - working on it for so long with no success does not make one happy :-\)

What is the WAN IP that your modem is offering to the router?

The modem gives the router an IP address of 192.168.2.4

Your double natd. You have to bridge your modem.

So basically I need to set the modem up to not act as a nat, and set up my router (in my case with PPoE) rather than dynamic dns.  Then the IP address I get from the modem is not a 192.168.... number.

Is this how you would bridge the router?

Thanks

Sounds like one of those Westell DSL modems.  If it is...

The modem will need to be put into bridged mode.  Remove the DIR-655 from the setup and connect the modem directly to your computer.  Then follow these directions:

http://netservices.verizon.net/portal/link/help/item&objId=17596

Once the modem in bridged mode, disconnect your computer from the modem.  Then connect the modem to the WAN port on the DIR-655.  Next, connect your computer back to the DIR-655.

Once your computer has the new IP address, log into the 655 and go through either the internet setup wizard or do it manually (Setup -> Internet), making sure to set it for PPPoE and give it the proper user/pass credentials.

Of course make sure UPnP is enabled (Advanced -> Advanced Network) - your WHS should set up everything automatically via UPnP, it may be a wise idea to remove any port forwards or virtual servers you've set before you start testing your setup.
