DIR 655 plus another router
« on: November 13, 2008, 05:40:41 PM »

I have a router connected to the internet and a cable going from that router to my DIR - 655, that's on another division of my house, I have internet in all computers, i have wireless internet but i can't see my other computers connected to the first router.

Basically i can only share files between the computers connected to the same router not between routers i wanted to know if there's a way to do that. I have internet in all of them just can't share files.

Thanks

Each router determines a network. So the one router has establised a network within the other. The first thing you will want to do is go into the admin page for the 655, go to Setup->Network Settings

Go down to the DHCP server and uncheck the Enable DHCP server

You will have to make sure you assign the router an IP that is in the range of your other router, (where you should also make a reservation for it) And make sure the subnet mask is set to match the other computers on your first router.

What you really want to do is change the 655 from a router to an access point.

These are just some of the steps I can think of off the top of my head. Hopefully it works for you.

I imagine you are going to have to do a lot of tweaking though, as part of the job of a 'router' is to smash local type data when they try to get outside the local network. It might be more worthwhile for you to return the router and get an access point.

your double nating.
2 routers together make trouble.
you need to not use the DIR-655 as a 2nd router.

either your first router or the DIR-655 need to be set as a gateway. otherwise all you are doing is double nat'ing.

also i had similar issues with some other hardware and found that it was a set of bad cables. so be sure to replace your cables.

That is a double NAT for sure. The WAN port of the 655 has a firewall in it just as it would if you were connecting it to a modem, so the traffic coming back in from the LAN of the other router to the WAN of the 655 is going to be stopped.

Disable DHCP in the 655 and do not use the WAN port. Connect it as a LAN device and static it's IP to something on your subnet

Make sure you take the right IP from the (1st) modem. Some of them have assigned ranges (see modem setup).

I disabled the DHCP and assigned a static IP to the second router and it works, i unplug the cable from WAN and connected to the lan.

I would like to know if i can retain the router functionality and still be able to see a mediacenter i have connected to the homegateway, because the shareport utility it's not working.

Basically i wanted to know if there's a way to open the firewall on the WAN port to just be able to see the mediacenter.

If you attach the mediacenter to the 655 router, and then turn on DMZ under Advanced->Firewall And set it to the mediacenter computer, you should be able to share the mediacenter to all the computer within your network.

The guys around here probably know a better way, so you might want to hang tight for their response before you go moving your mediacenter ;)

Also, I can't actually see why you are wanting the 655 to act as a router.

At the looks of it, all you basically require is a simple AP

Is it possible to create a VPN between the two computers.
